View Full Version : How often do you have to have suicidal thoughts before they're that "serious"?

I think of suicide.. literally a few times a day. Sometimes for no reason, sometimes out of feeling the need to give up on life, and others when I'm angry or upset. I constantly think of different ways to commit suicide.. shooting myself, jumping off a building, stabbing myself, and so on.

I attempted to jump off a bridge when I was 17, but the Police got to me and stopped me and I was detained for 3 days under the MHA, and that's not a situation I'd like to repeat, but then I had an actual reason to be depressed.

I have depression, and I'm very cut off from reality at the moment. I am generally quite a social person, but I go through these phases where I choose to be alone, and have absolutely zero sex drive, and I get insomniac and prefer to stay in online or listening to music or anything like that.

The thing is, nothing's really prompted it this time. I know this looks like a rant, but I'm really confused about myself lately.

If you've got an actual plan to kill yourself and you have the resources, then it's serious. If it's serious, then I highly recommend that you talk to someone about it: a friend, a family member, a therapist, or a suicide hotline if you can't do any of the others. Be proactive and take steps to keep yourself safe. You have to remember that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, things can get better with some help, support and effective coping mechanisms.

Stay safe.

I have no proper plan per se, it's mainly detailed ideation. It's like I 'play' with the idea a lot.

Well, if it makes you feel better sometimes when I see a sharp knife or something I just wonder what it would be like to use it to hurt myself. Then I get a little depressed that I thought that. I don't think I'd ever actually go through or make a suicide plan since I hate the idea of losing my life, dying is my greatest fear. I just, like you so greatly put it, play with the idea of it.

In my opinion, Michael, any suicidal thoughts are 'serious'.

But if they're recurring things, maybe you could try seeing a councellor? I know it's the usual suggestion, but it really is the best suggestion. Those who ignore the advice of others are often doomed. In more ways than one. *I heard that somewhere...*

I'm very skeptical about talking to 'professionals' such as counsellors, psychiatrists, etc. Now, I know many of them do a very good job, but the very thought of someone who talks to literally thousands of people over their lifetime and gets paid to do it is off-putting. I'm not saying they don't care, but I never feel right with that sort of thing.

I feel quite.. cowardly and in some ways stuck inbetween. I always think of suicide, but never feel quite bad enough to actually go and do it.

I'm pretty sure that means you would rather stay alive if you can't. Just don't worry, and be happy. Also, talking helps, even if it's just like this on a forum.

Cheers

if you are seriously considering suicide, or even playing around with the idea, i recommend telling someone. whether it's a friend, counselor, therapist or suicide hotline is up to you. sometimes just saying to yourself can help. Like Epiphany said, suicide is a permanent solution, if you can really call it that, to a temporary problem. there's no going back. I think based on what you've told us you are a very social person that has introverted phases. that's totally normal. i also think that inside you really want to live. i could be wrong, but i think i'm right.

You really need to talk to someone about the thoughts you getting, its actually very serious if your planning on killing yourself, maybe you need anti depressents and need to speak to someone, you should really go to your doctor or GP and tell them, or tell someone you trust? A friend, a teacher, family member? anyonee who you feel who you can trust.. xx

you need to be realy careful with the suicide stuff.... i had been having a couple bad months at school (teacher, wanted to kill her) and i went to the guidence office a lot and then one time i accidentaly said "i could just kill myself" and the school called my parents and made me go see a therapist...... he helped out a lot...... but the point is just be careful.

I agree, any type of suicidal thoughts are serious, because once youve had them, nothing is impossible. All it takes is something bad for you to put that plan to use so be careful. Although, i guess alot of people fantasise about death,so maybe it's not so bad just as long as you keep it under control.
