Hi, I play the violin and the viola. "Fiddle" is just a sort of slang term for a violin, they are exactly the same thing.

A violin has 4 strings, from highest to lowest these are E A D G. The G string is the lowest note you can play on a violin and is the G below middle C.

A viola is bigger than a violin, probably about 25% bigger. It also has 4 strings, these are A D G C. The C string is the lowest note on a viola and is one octave below middle C. So the viola can play lower notes and comes in between a violin and a cello.

Fiddle is not a "slang term for violin." Fiddling is actually a different style of playing the violin which produces the type of sound you commonly hear in genres such as Country or Celtic.

I stand by my earlier answer. The question was about the physical instruments, in normal usage of the word "fiddle" and "violin" are the same thing.
