Syncopated sessions in the schoolyard,
Where Johnny met Maria,
But Maria never heard
Johnny say I love her,
But not for who she is.
Johnny's in his twenty's now,
Drives a four door sedan
And lives like a soldier,
With a rucksack on his back
And a pistol in its holster
At his side.
He's ready for war,
He's ready for hell.
He's ready for love,
He's ready to dwell...
On the syncopated sessions in the schoolyard
Where he gave Maria a ring
Made from candy wrappers,
Stuck together using glue sticks
And scotch tape.
It was a multi-colored ring,
A reminder that youth was still abound
But that love was in the air,
The transition was occurring,
The baby bird was taking flight,
Unhindered by the wind.
Maria smiled that day.
Maria smiled for a long time.
But then a few years later
When this syncopated sessions in the schoolyard
Were no more,
Time eased away the fallacy of love
And the truth hit home.
The rub of love was lost,
The ring fell apart
And was just a squishing together of candy wrappers
And decaying glue and rotting tape.
Johnny now lives like a soldier,
And Maria, like a medic.
Johnny's got his heart on his sleeve
And his gun cocked and ready,
Maria's got her adrenaline shot
And her arm nice and steady.
