So this just happened to me. I was watching a video on YouTube when, all of the sudden, the noise from the left speaker wasn't working. So I turned them off and on again, that solved the problem. Not five seconds after that, they both go out. So I turn them off and on again, nothing. So I unplugged the jack from the computer (yes, it was in the right port) and plugged it back in. Still nothing.

I'm guess a wire must have come loose SOMEWHERE, but I'm confused about this.

Yeah probably. Old fashioned headphones would do that too.

Is this a 2 or 2.1 system? If it's a 2.1, does the subwoofer act as the reciever? (All wires go into it) If so, try looking at the connections on that, or take it apart and make sure everything is gold.
If it's a 2 speaker setup check the main speaker for problems, and take it apart to make sre everything is gold as well.

Ok, it seems the problem is solved. Turns out that the wires connecting the two speakers got tangled up really bad and cut off anything going into the computer port. Guess I need to keep track of wires a bit better.

Lol, glad you got it fixed.
