View Full Version : Changing Operating Systems

I was just wondering over this about a few minutes ago. If I were to switch operating systems, which I do hope to do at some point, would it affect my RAM in anyway? I am currently on 8 gigs of RAM on Vista 64-bit. If I were to switch to say Windows 7 64-bit, would I be able to keep my old RAM from Vista or would I have to buy more memory?
One more question. I got my current computer custom built and saw it built under my supervision. I am past the six month hardware warranty but not the one year repair warranty. Depending on the company, would it be possible for me to take my computer back and get a new OS on it without getting charged? I'm going to call them in a few days to see if this is possible.
EDIT: To clarify for any confusion, my computer was custom built for Vista.

Since it was custom built I don't think you can get it upgraded to Win 7 for free all you have to do is buy the disc and go through the upgrade option and it does all the work for you. It doesn't mess up your RAM in anyway.

RAM is hardware. Windows is software.
Yes, you can keep the same RAM, in fact, 8 gigs should be more than enough.
That's like asking if you need to buy a new microwave to cook Bagel Bites instead of soup. ;)

I'm confused by that statement, you said it was custom built, then you go ahead and say that you're going to call the company?
Do you mean that you customized like a high-end Dell or Alienware?

If your computer was built that recently, it should require no changes to run Windows 7. It wasn't likely custom built "for Vista" either, just custom built. One doesn't build for a specific OS subversion.
I don't know if they'll give you Windows 7 free, but it doesn't hurt to ask. If not, you can certainly buy and install it yourself.
