I haven't seen this thread anywhere else so I decided to ask here. Does anyone have tips on desensitizing yourself from triggers?

A really big trigger for me is anything with a blade on it; knives, scissors, razors ect. And I'm constantly being exposed to things like these in the art department at our school and up until now I've been working on my project in a room away from all of them but now that I've finished it I can't justify being in a separate room.

There are also 3 specific words I know of that are triggers for me that seem to be coming up a lot in the book I'm studying for english and every time they come up it always catches me off guard.

I just want to be able to sit in school without people giving me weird looks for staring at crafting knives or pausing in the middle of reading out in english.

Well, i sopose as you have naturaly assosiated them with self harm you cannot do anything about it.

Mabie if you try to look at these words as much as posssiable with out cutting then that may help. But it will be extreamly trickey!

I sopose triggereing things are like phobias you sotra have to become exposed to them to make them go away.

Rubber bands! Put one on your wrist and snap every time you feel the urge to cut or anything. The pain from the snaps will satisfy the feelings.
Also try red pen. Draw lines and stuff. The red can sometimes trick your brain into thinking that you did something.
I use the rubber band a lot. I find that it helps.
*The people looking at you weird, I admit if you did the rubber band thing, people are going to notice. But this problem isn't about others, it is about you. What matters is that you can help yourself with the triggers, and try and make them less noticeable.*

The red pen idea is pretty good.

I don't know if this will work at all but you could try associating the words with more positive images. So every time you see it force yourself to think about the lighter aspects of the word and make these new associations visual.

haha, you're asking the impossible with a couple of them. What kind of positive connotation can you find for the word pathetic ect?

not responding to triggers is really hard and you may never get over them. but i'd recommend the rubber band idea to make the responses more minor.

Umm... Wouldn't that be really unpleasant.
