Little big planet on the PS3 was, in my opinion, the best PS3 game of 2008, even compared to say, Resistance 2 or Metal Gear solid 4. While those games felt overhyped and underwhelming, LBP felt just right. It was innocent and cute, in a world of blood splattering shooter, in a year where the most promising platformer, Banjo and kazooie nuts and bolts, was dissapointing. And sackboy, whether you'll admit it or not, is adorable. It's not perfect, but its brilliant. Now we have a scaled down version for the PSP. People may think that media molocule were forced to cut down on many of the game's most distinguishing features to make it fit on the PSP, that is not the case. This isn't better than its PS3 big brother, but its nearly as good. Almost
So despite what you may have thought about they might have had to cut from the little big planet experience to make it fit on a PSP UMD disc, those thoughts would be wrong. There's only two plains to the levels in this one, unlike the PS3 version which has three. It's very slightly inferior graphically to its big brother, but not significantly. It's actually amazing how good this game looks, for a PSP game. Its shorter than the ps3 version, clocking in at around 5 hours. There's no PS3 - PSP connectivity sadly, or level sharing, but giving the level layout differences between the two, its not to be unexpected.Another thing they removed, for the good, is the limited amount of times you used to be able to use a checkpoint before you had to restart the level, as now when you die, you simply lose a few points. Single player still fantastic though for the limited time it lasts.
Moving onto Little Big Planets biggest feature, user created levels, and , and the ability to create your own levels. Fans will be happy to here that the creation tools from the PS3 version have translated onto PSP really, really well. Its not as smooth as the PS3 version, and it can be slightly cumbersome at times, I.E it freezes alot. Aside from that, the tools are great, easy to use,and fun, and being able to form your own creations on ther go, on the bus, on the toilet, in a restraunt, is fantastic. And playing levels that other people have made works, in my opinion, better than the PS3 version. Instead of playing the levels directly off the LBP servers, you download them to your PSP memory stick, so you can play them whenever. The levels take up 1.5 MB of space on your stick, so its a small amount, and its freaking awesome. The tutorials that explain how to do everything in the game are informative and actually great to listen to, as Stephen Fry lends his tremendous voice talent to the games proceedings.
So in conclusion, Little Big Planet PSP isn't better than LBP PS3, but that isn't a bad thing, as its really quite brilliant, and its so worth your money. Brilliant almost all the way. Buy it. 8/10.
