This is a story I just started writing today any advice is needed please, thank you.
“Mr. Carter, there’s a lady who would like to talk to you, “ My secretary pokes her head in my office informing me of a visitor. “Tell her to come in,” A couple minutes later a woman in her twenties, wearing a angel blue dress, walks into my office. “Hello Judd,” My mouth went dry, “Martha?” I couldn’t believe my eyes, I thought she ran off with that guy from high school when she found out that she was pregnant. “Yes it’s me.” A single tear trails down her face.
(12 Years Before)
The clatter of the Yellowfield High School cafeteria was deafening, but of course it was the last day of school until after summer. I look up at James my current boyfriend, my parents never approved of him. They would call him “Bad news” or “A bad influence”. He’s turning 18 next week, soon as he gets arrangements together for our apartment we’re out of here. He leans his head down kissing me softly on the lips, smiling when our lips part. There had been a mess up a couple months ago, the protection had broken and I hadn’t of been getting my periods, I never told James because it would just cause worrying. My eyes drift over to a different table. There sat Judd Carter, we used to be close, actually we lived across the street from each other. But then his father died and he had to move in with his Aunt and Uncle, we haven’t talked since. I lean my head on James shoulder, he wraps his arms around my waste, setting his chin on my head. Lunch break was almost over and I was regretting eating. I felt the wave of sickness pass over my body and pealed his arms off from around my waste, rushing to the restroom.
Not this again, it’s just a stomach bug, it’ll go away. Please let it go away. Walking out of the restroom I pop a piece of strong gum in my mouth and go to my next class.
After school was over I walked home with Tracy, my best friend. She was telling me about the recent guy she is in love with this week. Last week it was Bernard Neding, This week it’s Jason Neding, Bernard’s old brother. Her face explodes in a huge smile when she tells me that he would be coming over that night. Laughing, I push her ever so slightly into the grass in the yard we were passing. “Well puff to you too!” She jokingly replies. We get to her house and go our own ways. I pass the playground on the way to my house and sit on the bench letting the memories overflow.
“Push me higher!” “Higher!” Judd’s laughs stop him from pushing any harder. “It’s getting dark I should go.” A frown breaks the smile on his face, his eyes drop to the muddy ground. “Is your Dad home today?” Martha asks him quietly almost a whisper. He shakes his head as a silent “No”. “You can come over to my house for dinner!” Martha says excitedly. “My Mom loves it when you come over.” Judd’s face breaks into a smile that could have brighten the park that night.
I sigh as the horrible memory of that night unfolds.
The phone started ringing and Mrs. Darson picks up the phone. Her voice remains low, then she asks something they can’t hear. Martha’s Mom walks into the room trying to keep a straight face through her tears. Judd looks up from the board game they had been playing, Trouble, he always loved that game. She tells Martha to leave the room, she does, the next thing she remembers is hearing Judd’s screams and crying. Rushing into the living room she wraps her arms around her friend and comforts the shaking 10 year old as much as she could. They had a sleep over in her room that night, she moved her hand on his back throughout the night as sobs shook his body. Before she knew it the night was almost over and his Aunt and Uncle would come and get him the next afternoon. Tears slide down her face. She knew that she was loosing him.
I started to feel the tears sting at my eyes. Blinking fast I tried to block them but they started rolling down my face. Time to go back home… A block away from my house I can hear the screaming. Unlocking the door with my extra key, I head inside the house to see them yelling at each other. Same thing everyday. Scowling at them I go grab my backpack filling it with closes and stuff I need. A photo of Judd and I playing at the park sticks out of my dresser drawer. I grab it. I leave a note telling my parents I’m staying at a friend house. I get to his house and climb up the ladder to his window. Knocking on it softly to get his attention. James looks up startled, I motion for him to open the window, he does. Kissing him I ask him if we can get out of this place tonight. He looks down at my face with a look of confusion and says yes. We left later that night.
I broke the news to him about being pregnant a month after we got settled in, I was just starting to show. We got married a week later. The night we got married after he fell asleep I felt empty and alone even though my husband slept next to me. I turn around and listen to his breathing, matching mine with his, and fell asleep soon after. Then next morning I woke up in extreme pain, tears falling down my face as I look in the bed sheets, they were covered in blood. I screamed for James and he rushed me to the hospital. “I’m so sorry ma’am.” The doctor said, I knew that we had lost the baby. The next couple weeks go by in a blur. I would lay in bed as James would stroke the hair away from my face.
(A couple years later.)
“Mommy!” Alisha scrambled out of bed and jumped on my stomach. Chuckling slightly I tickle her tummy and she screams and laughs. I get out of bed with her following closely behind. Alisha was born a year after I miscarried my first baby. I look at the fridge there was a note from James,
Martha, going to be at work late today, I’ll bring dinner home.
Love you.
I smile at the note and put it in my front pocket. I decided to call the babysitter and go out for the day, after she arrived I gave Alisha a hug and left.
“How long do you think we’ll be friends?” Judd asked Marsha at their favorite hiding spot. “I hope forever and ever.” Marsha replied smiling.
Last day of this hell finally. Judd ran his hands through his hair, it’s getting longer since his Uncle told him to stop being such a hippie with his long hair. It was his last day of school and his last chance to talk to Marsha. He felt bad for not talking to her again after his father died. He sighs and takes another drink of his water then looks over to where Marsha and James were sitting. The school calls them a “perfect couple” he scowls at the thought. They kiss and Judd puts his head in his hands. Why didn’t I leap at the chance when I had one? He decides to cut his break short and go to his locker.
(Judd)
I gulp. She looks beautiful… I shake my head, “I..I thought you left town?” Marsha quickly wipes the tear for her face. “I’m here for my husbands funeral” My heart stops beating for a second. “James. He’s dead?” Marsha nods sadly. I walk over to her and wrap her in a hug, she sobs on my shoulder explaining he had been in a accident at work. I stare straight ahead wondering why she had come to me of all people… Marsha left my office a couple minutes later after telling me when the funeral was.
They went to the funeral the next day, Marsha went back to Florida with her daughter, and Judd stayed in New Jersey with his company. A couple months later Marsha came back to visit her parents and her husbands grave stone. At James stone she hears distant crying, looking up she saw Judd crying at the head stone of his fathers grave. She got up and went over to him, patting his back the same way she did the night his father died. Judd didn’t bother to lift his head, he knew it was her, just by the feeling of her soft arm around his back and her hand on his shoulder. She put her forehead on his back trying to keep her tears from falling, “Judd…” She said his name softly and kept moving her hand on his back. He turns around and she opens her arms, he falls into her arms the tears never stopping. “Come on,” Marsha gets up and motions for him to follow her. He does, they walk to the park in silence. She sits on one of the swings, he sits on the one next to hers. They swing in silence for a while. “About the last day in high school…” Her voice wanders off. Judd looks at her, “I knew you had left because everyday you would sit at the park…” His eyes drop to the ground. “How do you know that?” She questions him. “I lived across the street from it and I would go there after school and sit at the opposite side as you but I never knew you were there until a couple days before you left,” He remains silent for a while. Marsha sighs, “I made a mistake marrying James I thought I loved him but after we got married things changed…” Judd could tell she was struggling past not letting the tears break the barrier of her eyes. “I miscarried the first baby, three weeks before was supposed to be born.” Trying to be strong she laughed bitterly, “James was having a affair with his boss,” She laughed again with a sick humorous twist. “His boss is or should I say was a transgender female who had a penis and he didn’t figure that out before dating her,”
