I felt the clammy, bony hands grasp my shoulders.
I felt his sickly sweet breath on the back of my neck.
I felt trapped.
I heard his shallow rhythm. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.
I heard his joints creak and moan as he moved closer.
I heard him whisper my name. Over. And. Over.
I sensed his eyes, burning deep into my skull.
I sensed the chill of his presence, yet the heat of our surroundings.
I sensed the end was near.
“Are you afraid, child?” he asked.
“Afraid of death?” I replied,
“Never.”
