Yeah, private servers suck. They're free but crash like every five minutes, have very low populations, and a lot of things are broken. Don't bother.

I suggest buying it. I was on YouTube looking at videos of private servers and how tk dowoad it free. Well I downloaded the installer for the free games and it wasn't even on a current patch. It was on 1.0.1 something lime that. I hated that because it woudve taken about a few weeks to a month maybe to long but idk to install all the patches up to 3.3. It took me four days to get only the original wow to install let alone the expansions which I didn't even bother. So once it was finished installing I signed up for a private server without me realizing it had to update all of the patches. It wouldve tAken up more HD space than the retail disk. I was excited when I signed up but i didn't know it had to update. So for Xmas I asked for wow and I'll be paying the 15 bucks a month or the game cards. I suggest no private server or downloading the installer from a site. I even forgotten my pword to the private server. Lol.
And if you mean legally do you mean actually buying the retail disk and joining a private server? Cause you'll have a gamekey that you won't use. Is that what you mean.
Again in my suggestion no don't join one. Just pay the 15 bucks a month like I'm doing.

If you download the multi-installer from the WoW site, you wouldn't have had that issue.
As a general rule of thumb, always download installers from the creators' site, never a 3rd party site (Such as download.com), unless it's the only place it's available.

Playing on private servers is technically illegal as the software used to create the servers is going to be illegally obtained and used. Aside from that, the people who make them usually change up the gameplay in some sort of way because they think it's cool to be level 9001 or whatever. Thus, you don't get the real experience.
Pay up, Blizzard designed this game for you, and worked hard on it. You shouldn't just take that and give nothing in return.
