DECATUR, Ga. -- A 4-year-old boy was killed by a falling bullet from celebratory gunfire while attending a New Year’s Eve church service in Decatur.

It happened at the Church of God of Prophecy in the 3300 block of Covington Drive in Decatur.

DeKalb police spokesman Jason Gagnon said it appears the bullet came through the church’s roof and struck the child in the head. DeKalb police told Channel 2 Action News that they are actively working leads in the case.
"It's so hard ... he was my only child," said Nathalee Peters, the child's mother.

Nathalee Peters told Channel 2 Action News reporter Tony Thomas that her family was waiting for a concert to begin at the church when her son, Marquel Peters, 4, was struck by the bullet. It happened just twenty minutes into the new year.

"I saw his Nintendo game fall on the floor, and I heard a sound and I heard him scream a little bit and I looked around and all I saw was blood coming from his head," said Nathalee Peters.

Family and friends are now making a plea for anyone with information to come forward. The area surrounding the church is full of houses and an apartment complex.

"They may have just gone out, fired a few gunshots into the air celebrating the new year having a good time and gone back to their family not knowing what happened, but a little boy is lying in a morgue today," said Pastor Lloyd Phipps.

It happened at the Church of God

Is there irony in that? Or some degree of symbolism.

"celebratory gunfire"

There's no such thing, and the mere fact that it happens is childish and pathetic. Guns are a weapon designed to kill plain and simple, they excel at this quite well.

They are NOT a sparkler

"What goes up must come down" rather basic concept really

I hope it was quick at least
I feel sorry for his family
No parent should have to bury their child, nvm a toddler.

That's ridiculous. From another article:

I love how more than 1 person has been hit in the Georgia dome. That's ridiculous.

Also, how does a bullet get all the way through a church roof and still have enough energy to kill a kid?

If you took physical science, you would know that when things fall, they have force. The farther it drops, the more force it has. Thats why they say even something as harmless a penny could kill someone if dropped from a high building.

If you really think I'm that stupid (or didn't take physics), you need help. The point is, normal roofs are not thin, and normal bullets are not generally heavy enough to possess the kinetic energy required to smash through them merely from the force of falling and still maintain the additional kinetic energy and orientation required to kill someone inside the building.

I wasn't actually ignorant as to how it could happen, just sort of in wonderment at the improbability.

I'm sorry if that sounded mean, wasn't trying to come across that way, I just thought you didn't know. Misunderstanding.
