I feel bad, I lost my diary early so I lost my novel. I have been extremely busy what with Chey and all. I forgot about all of you who were waiting for chap 2. So I will begin it on the morrow. As for now I will re post chapter one to the open book.
And so Our Story Begins!
The not so normal life of one very unlucky girl.
Chapter 1; A bad beginning to a long summer.
We find ourselves in the basement in the locally know Briscoe middle school. The school year is drawing to a close , and the building is filled with the chattering of happy school goers. All except one…..
Shelby is her name, and she isn’t the stereotypical 8th grade girl. She dresses in baggy brightly colored clothes, her face is laden with piercings and her hair is dyed a subtle shade of red. That is not all you should know about her, she hides the fact that she has a habitual cutting issue and the baggy clothes are the veil to hide her constant fight with bulimia. The two things that she holds closest in these times are the love for her best friend Naomi and her ever growing love interest in a well known boy; Jake. Whom we will meet later for now we must stick to Shelby.
We find her in the workshop of the school, her attention lies solely on the fresh gash she just carved into her wrist. The chatter continues but the playful sound of soft souled shoes, skipping ever closer to Shelby was enough to grab her attention. She quickly shields her injured wrist and puts on her accustomed fake smile.
“Hi Shelbs!!!!!!!!!!!” Naomi screamed. Now Naomi was the exact opposite of Shelby. Always wearing her trusty push up bra, something American Eagle and an extremely potent cherry blossum lotion. Capable of attracting any guy from a ways away and warning other girls of her arrival. As you can probably tell Naomi must have most guys wrapped around her finger. Where does that leave Shelby? Well certainly not in the lap of a different guy every week. That ceased to bother Shelby as had crown accustomed to it and the growing loneliness that she felt, “How’d you sleep?”
“Hi hun. Oh you know I don’t sleep, my mind keeps me from doing so.” She proceeded to grab her hair and tuck it back into a ponytail as to keep it out of the machines and harm’s way. “I just wish I could ask him, my life would be so much easier if I did even if he said no.” Her eyes darted downward as she let out an exuberant sigh. Courage was something she obviously lacked and she knew what was going to be said next.
“Well why don’t you ask him to go to the grad dance with you?” Naomi replied as she applied her first coating of cherry lip gloss. “It’s worth a try, he will think about it and he’s a really nice guy.”
“Hun you know how I feel.”
“Yeah…. How could a boy who could have any girl in the school and even girls in the high school want me blah blah balh.” She mumbled as she pulled out her faithful pocket mirror out of her expensive purse. “I haven’t even asked you, are you even going to the dance?” She questioned as she glared over the corner of her mirror.
Shelby paused, she wasn’t the skinniest of girls or the prettiest girl in the school. She honestly didn’t need more harassment from the popular girls and the jocks. “ No I don’t think so Naomi” She mumbled, scared of what Naomi might say to her. There was pause between the two of them and the chatter resumes. Finally the silence is broken when Naomi slamed shut her mirror. Shelby glanced up quickly and met Naomi’s eyes and the silence continued.
“I know your going to go.” Naomi stated with an air of confidence. “All you need is a sexy dress, preferably yellow to give you some color, some pretty shoes and confidence!”
“But I hate dress shopping….”
“Oh shut up, you me and your mom this weekend! We need to sexify you up for Jake!” The bell rang loud loudly through the work shop. The other students began to gather their belonging and excahnge good byes and headed on their separate ways. “Aw well, I’m going over Mike’s house tonight so only call if its important.”
“Oh” Shelby replied as they embraced. “The whole family will be home so I will call you lateer.” She smiled and they hugged again.
“Oh and Shelby hunny?” She nodded as to urge Naomi to continue. She grasped Shelby’s wrist, and rubbed the blood between two fingers. “No more cutting, you think I don’t notice?” Shelby stood speechless. “Well come on I’ll walk you to your bus.”
For now we must leave Shelby to discuss her rather unorthodox family. Her Father; a chef and owner of a local bistro. He also happens to be an avid pot smoker, who isn’t afraid to admit his addiction to the illegal drug. Her mother; co owner of the bistro also quite a bit older than her husband. She is quite timid by nature and often stands aside when her husband is mad. Her sister; a self proclaimed extreme Miley Cyrus lover and a untrustworthy person who sees every little thing as hers. Finally her little brother a soccer lover but very jealous and not willing to share Shelby. Now that we know her family lets get back to Shelby.
“Dress shopping she said? Sure, I love Naomi she’s such a sweetheart.” Her mother stated joyfully while the others ate quietly. “So your going to the dance?”
Shelby nodded, she was still obviously not happy about being told that she was going to go.
“Hope your not going with that Adam kid, he’s always all over you…. Outta’ kick his ass! Her father snapped as her siblings snickered “I bet it’s the golfer, what is his name sweety?”
“Jake.” Shelby said, as she stared quietly at her full plate.
“Yeah him, but I doubt it he probably will have some nice arm candy. Wouldn’t get caught dead with a girl in sweatpants and a hoodie” The three of them laughed collectively and Shelby could feel her mothers eyes on her.
“Can I be excused?” She pleaded, as she choked back the gut wrenching sobs.
“No you may-” Her father began but it was too late. She kicked back her seat and dashed up to her room. She flung herself onto her bed bed and the sobs commensed. The crying and the chorus of her parents crying “Shelby!” was enough to lull her aching soul into a deep slumber
Sleep well Shelby, until tomorrow. May your dreams be good and may you sleep soundly. We will pick up with you in the morning.
