Can we get rid of the "let off some steam" part in TWPR description? Just about every rant in there the OP gets bitched out. To me to fix it its either that or add "and feel the wrath of our bitter members". But I didnt think you'd go for that one.
Also can we unstick my Quick Reference? I know you guys talked about it when I wasnt here. I dont have the time nor dedication to VT to keep it up and thats too much of a hassle to ask anyone else to do. So if its not updated why keep it around?

I can somewhat agree with you on this. I think it's great to have TWPR for people to rant in, but when every one of them gets bitched out for ranting in a rant thread, what's the point? I hate to see every rant start a bitch-fest. But if we disallow ranting in TWPR, where are people going to rant? I suppose they could use their blog, but to me, it's not the same.

Forum-appropriate?? Meaning relationship vents end up going to r&d, mental illness somewhere in psych ward (wherever appropiriate) ect.
Or we could work on not bitching people out 'cause they're frustrated at something.

There are tons of rants that don't have a forum appropriate location.

I see both sides to this. I think people should be able to freely rant but at the same time when you post in the middle of the open forum you open yourself up to all sorts of responses, positive and negative. Most people don't realize that when people rant majority of the time they don't mean what they say.
If somebody posts "I'm so mad at my step dad I wish he was dead" its likely to generate controversy; never mind the fact that he could have just gotten into an argument and posted what he felt at the time. 10 minutes later he could feel completely different about it yet for days people will post how he was wrong for wishing someone dead.
We can always tighten up moderation in rant threads and prevent the unnecessary or excessive criticism of ranters. Personally, I prefer to let ranters be since its not my place to judge how they express their emotions and leave them to their peace.

I'm not saying to disallow rants by any means, but just not encourage them by the description. The desc. says that its okay to rant here and then the comments and attitudes say that its not. To me, if we get rid of that part of the desc its the posters own risk by ranting there and they get whatever response they get.
If the bitching can be moderated, then good luck.

Tbh, this is a public forum.
If you rant and express yourself openly in any public space then you are opening yourself up to criticism as well as support.
If people want to rant without any possibility of getting negative feedback then they need to do it in a more controlled or more private setting (e.g. blogs, diaries etc).

I agree Heather. Back when I originally joined, people weren't bashed for ranting, and now they are. I think it is possible to stop the bashing, if not, just take it out of the description like you said.

The only ones I've seen get out of hand have been those that are about VT members and staff or "hot" topics (religion, for example). Normal rants, as far as I'm aware, don't tend to get lots of negative comments.

There are the occasional relationship rants where the poster says 'guys are assholes' and people get all moany about the generalisation when the poster was only angry at her boyfriend or whoever it may be

I find that a valid point.
However, I do find it a bit counterproductive to invite people to vent their frustrations only for people to go out of their way to create more of them.

I'm going to quote exactly what I said in a rant thread.
Let's all remember that this is a rant and simply her voicing her opinions and trying to cool down. So let's all cool off and show some respect towards each other's opinions before it gets out of hand thanks.
What I said was to "stay respectful" I didn't say you had to shut up but to just respect her opinions just like she should respect yours. And that goes for EVERYONE you can voice why you disagree just don't cross the line to being an ass.

I could swear that we had a rant-specific thread at some point but no one else seems to remember so I may be imagining things. xP
What do you guys think about that, a thread in TWPR for those ranting moments when you just want to let off steam and don't really want people giving you advice? It'd be like the Send A Message thread, or Dirty Little Secrets, how there's sort of a rule about not responding to other people's posts. It's just there to let things out and get them off your chest.
Would anyone use that?

There are a couple of "Rant Threads" floating about - there's one in my diary and then I remember at least one or two more in other diaries. But I think people like getting responses which they tend not to get in these tailor-made threads. Come to think of it, it may be more widely used if it was in TWPR though.

But they're not really open season for the rest of the population to use.

For the quick reference, I agree. I tried for a bit and then i retired from modship and it wasn't picked back up. Just abandon it and unstick.
For TWPR, it has become a place where people can't let off steam, and thats not good...
We need to be a pillar of support rather than a pillar of criticism.

Hmm, how about a private ranting section? A section where only you (and I guess administrators/gmods) could view what you post. Some people might seriously like that, because some people are going to want to vent and not receive any feedback at all (there are times even when I honestly just want to vent and don't care much for any feedback at all, I just need to get what's on my mind out of my system... And an argument about it doesn't help me get rid of it, it keeps it with me). But yeah, I don't know how many people would use that, so that's up to the administrationismz.

Yeah guys, because people on this forum aren't sensitive enough. If you don't like feedback, then either stop posting or make the thread and don't look at it afterwards. Seriously.

If arguments/wars did occur then moderation would be able to deal with it (warnings, infractions etc) and tbh many people wouldn't go to the trouble of creating a new thread just to have a dig at someone else.

Too true.
I think that this hole private thing is a load of bull.
Leave rant threads open, I think moderation could be tight, as in:
*Post in the title it's a Rant.
and then have certain rules about posting in rants such as:
*No attacking the OP
*All posts must be sensible and/or critics must be constructive.
I think like that we could monitor it better, and if anyone gets out of line, could be handled as so.
There is no written rule about, therefore it's too much freedom, when we expect common sense. Let's be honest not everyone has it >.>

Well that's no fun. I usually rant to a) release some frustration or b)to get yelled at because people don't know how to take a rant. Making it so the OP couldn't get attacked is just silly. If we make this a law, I can haz ekshepshun?

Jeff that's exactly the point though.
Rants are not meant to be there, so you can attack the OP.
and if you want to attacked, simple don't put "rant" in the title, and you are open to a fest of attacks.
The Batman
January 3rd, 2010, 05:01 PM
The thing is people shouldn't have to be worried about being attacked in a rant thread since bashing is against the rules anyway. You can tell someone they are wrong or that you don't agree with them in a calm and respectful way without calling them an idiot, stupid, or saying that they are petty. It's just that people tend to not care about being an asshole and really if that's the case then I don't care about being the asshole mod and infracting.

That would be harder to moderate, would it not?
If they have to create a whole new thread to bash someone then it makes it easier to moderate and easier for people to not get upset/angered by criticism.
