You said you were doing this during the summer, and you're talking to him now? That's 6 months of not communicating very much, that's quite enough time to put some distance between two people. Maybe try asking him if he's ignoring you for some reason? From the information above, it doesn't sound you've done anything wrong to possibly upset him.

Ask him if he'd like to hang out sometime, or something real casual with maybe some other friends you two share. If he says no or doesn't get back to you, then don't bother with him.

Keeping a friendship with people far away is a very difficult thing. You and him will lead completely different lives. I think trying to stay friends with him is a lost cause, because he doesn't seem to be putting in any of the effort you are into the friendship.
