In the Italian dub of Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, the Starlights' sex switching was not present. Instead the Sailor Starlights were said to be the twin sisters of the Three Lights. This explanation was added to the Italian dub after Vera Slepoj, a psychologist, claimed that Sailor Moon made young boys become homosexual.

In Italy the anime was blamed by some psychologists and parents' associations because of its violent scenes and sexual references which, in their opinion, made it unfit for a young audience. In 1997 the psychologist Vera Slepoj declared that the last season would seriously compromise children's sexual identity, because of the Three Lights' sex change when they transformed into Sailor Senshi. Because of this, there were a number of changes which altered the storyline and affected the popularity of the series, one of which was that the Sailor Starlights were the twin sisters of the Three Lights. This change, however, did not occur until episode 188.

I read this on like 9 different websites.
Apparently, these Italian people aren't OK with their kids being gay. I'm not saying that what they said is right. It makes you think that they would blame Sailor Moon for their children being gay. That is retarded.

Sailor Uranus & Sailor Neptune are lesbian lovers but they didn't change that! So apparently, they wouldn't care if their child's role model was a moody rich lesbian.

And also, they had no problem with the full nudity shown in episode 200. But when it comes to girls who came to Earth disguised as men who can turn back into women, they throw a hissy fit. But really, in the manga, they where girls who came to Earth who DRESS UP as men. No sex changes. But this was changed due to a miss-communication between Naoko Takeuchi (the creator of Sailor Moon) and Toei Animation.

The sex change and the nudity are a couple of the reasons Sailor Stars was never dubbed. And because Toei and Naoko refused to hand over dubbing rights to CWi (Cloverway - the Canadian company that dubbed seasons 3 & 4 for North America) after seeing how fucked up seasons 1 & 2 where after DiC was done with them! And what was changed about seasons 3 & 4! Even though they didn't do a thing to the scene where Ami (Sailor Mercury) is completely nude before she finally uses Mercury Crystal Power Make Up on screen. That caused a lot of controversy.

What are your opinions?

One, it's difficult to read your post in that fancy italicized text.

Second, I don't think that a psychologist's opinion makes the whole country homophobic.

Sailor Moon does have some risky stuff in it, which makes it not the most awesome thing for certain audiences, and these audiences change with the country. Obviously the parent's association didn't like that stuff, so they wanted it removed.

Thirdly, it sounds like the associations are unhappy with TRANSSEXUALS, not HOMOSEXUALS.

Stuff from Japan is GOING to be re-dubbed, edited, and as some say, "chopped up and ruined". Get used to it - turn on the English subtitles for the original or learn Japanese :|

I can tell that you're upset about the change, however, it happened, there's nothing you can do to change it, and it's unlikely that homophobia will grow in the future.

I dont really care because its an anime so it seems trivial to be upset about.

some people really really enjoy anime and how a society accepts popular culture can reveal how that society thinks.

well, ever here of Roman Catholicism? its completely agaisnt homosexuality, being the prominent religion of that country its easy to see why they would do that, sure its outrageous but it is only one effeminate anime.

sigh...look, I understand that someone could be upset about this but italy is generally intolerant to homosexuality so its normal for them to change that content, its sad, but its a reality of the world we live in, so could everyone quit acting like I'm completely incorrect?

Hmm...well it's only dubs, I hate dubs. It's kinda sad that Italy's really homophobic...it's like comparing them with those savage societies that burns alleged witches :/

I dont really care because its an anime so it seems trivial to be upset about.

and yeah, it maybe a trivial topic for you but it's different for the OP so i hope you can understand that

One or a few guys saying that doesn't make Italy homophobic.

Also, did you know that Leonardo De Vinci was possibly gay?

Just notice the topic of this thread and would like to reply.
I have been a patient of Dr. Slepoj for many years and this cost me a lot of money and a lot of time.
Not only this therapy did NOT solve my problems, but at the end she even blamed me because the therapy was at the end unsuccesful.
Go figure..

So because I'm Italian I'm automatically a homo phobe?

Italy is usually not homophobic although they're not supportive either.
What you're talking about is the bigotry of Italy. They're strongly propapal and really christian and they have a strong censorship triggered by a bunch of psychotic mothers that have nothing to do but sue or threaten to sue TV companies for what they show.
A few days ago I read about a teenage TV show getting nearly censored because it showed gay couples, atheism and sex changing discussions yet it wasn't because the one behind the show replied it was a big sign of bigotry and that the show was only real, which means something is changing.
Understand that Italy is a great land but some of its population is moralist and hypocrite, unfortunately this part of the population has a strong decision force.
I'm half Italian therefore I know what I'm talking about.
