Those guys have summed it up really. The thing is that if you are on a relatively small number of rep points just a few -reps from guys with high rep power can hit you quite badly.
Like Greg says, if you feel someone has given you -rep for something that doesnt deserve it you can appeal it by sending a pm to an admin. I've done that a couple of times and they really do revoke the -rep if they agree it was unfair.

Something similar happened to me. But the -rep was about right, so I couldn't weasel out of it :(

Just make sure that you provide screenshots of the reputation. That should help the admins even more with your case.

I dont think the admins need that, they can look it up for themselves.

To be fair, if a user (or two) with a high rep (there's a few floating around with 100+) neg-repped you, that could easily have caused a red block.

Depending on what rep they were on before the -rep...
As he was on 3 that makes sense.

I hope that those of us with reasonably or very high rep power use it with some sense of responsibilty. I know that I most likely can blow away anyone on a single green block and I do not do that lightly. Sometimes I will pm someone to explain that I dont like what they've posted and warn that if they post anything similar i will -rep next time. But then to be honest that sounds pompous and heavy handed so you cant win.
I do believe that no one should ever give -rep without stating the reason, that gives the person affected the chance to appeal if they dont think its fair.

actualy the -rep only takes off half the rep power of the person who is giving the neg rep
so a person with 100 power may neg rep someone
theyd only acutally lose 50 points

if someone is being an idiot and deserving of neg rep then its there own stupid fault for making moronic posts that get seen by those of us with high rep

There are plenty of moronic posts that dont get -rep so its a bit random.
I dont make it seem like its the basis of the whole world. but I do believe it matters to a lot of vt members, whether you think it should or not.
I do believe that if I, with 50 rep power, or you with 90, choose to -rep someone, which i dont do very often, then we have to consider the effect our rep power has on them. Its very different to if someone on 10 rep power does the same.

That's still a lot when you're new and got maybe 10+

You have to leave a comment. It won't allow you to rep if you don't.

That's not true Matt, I've got 2 recent reps showing in my UserCP at the moment where the person left no comment.

The ones I was referring too were +rep. I've no idea if you can -rep with no comment and I'm not going to try it out on anyone. But why would you do that anyway, it would be such a mean thing to do. Everyone deserves to know why the -rep was given. Like I said before, you dont have to sign it if you dont want to.

Who cares if someone gives you positive rep with no comment?

If i see someone make a post that i think deserves neg rep then I'm neg repping it. I don't care how many points I have or how many they have if they deserve it they they are getting it. Rep isn't that important it's just numbers and bars.

I agree, negative reputation is just bars and numbers I remembered I got negative rep just because I quoted the person who started the thread which I thought it wasn't a big deal out of it. The point is just move on who cares about what other people think about you

if that really happened, you should tell administrators as that is just silly.

People won't bother Pming an admin because it's such a pointless thing. I think that was the point he was trying to make...

oh jay kay el oh el.
I guess it's true. Reputation points and stuff like that isn't really that great of a thing anymore. It gets misused, horded, and it usually doesn't represent much about a member.

So question from me, since a person with high rep can damage a person with low rep,
can it also help someone out more if the repper has higher rep?
like say since im at -40 rep, and someone with like 100+ rep repped me, would that get me close to being out of the -?

When you get positive rep you get their rep power added to your rep points
so if there on 100 rep power youd gain 100 rep points
When you get negative rep you only lose HALF of the persons rep power
so if a person with 100 rep power neg reps you you will lose 50 points

It doesnt really work to try to get +rep, asking for it in your signature just puts people off and if anything makes them feel less inclined to give it. All you can do is to try to make informative and helpful posts, if you do that and other people agree with what you've put then the rep will follow.

You send them a personal message, the admins are Maverick and Epiphany. If they agree its unfair they will revoke it, the system does work!
