Just before midnight mass, a woman jumped the barrier, rushed the Pope and then knocked him down before she was wrestled to the ground by security guards.

The 82-year-old Pontiff wasn't hurt, but a Cardinal fractured his hip.

The woman is now under arrest.

The Vatican says she has psychiatric problems and she also tried to get to the Pope last year but failed.

Pope Benedict appeared unfazed as he addressed tens of thousands of supporters gathered in St. Peter's Square hours later

You don't tackle the pope, you just don't. Even though I don't follow Catholicism I still think it's horribly offense. She must've be insane.

Your thoughts?

The incident in St. Peter's Basilicahttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34588269/ns/world_news-world_faith/#) raised fresh questions about security for the pontiff, however, after officials said the woman involved had jumped the barrier at the 2008 Midnight Mass in a failed bid to get to the pope. She even wore the same red-hooded sweat shirt. The security at that place bothers me though. How'd she get away with doing this twice/

Watch the video, the second she's over that fence the guards are on her. It was the security guard that actually knocked the pope over from taking the woman down.

..but she did it last year too?

He's 82. Whether it be the pope, or your grandmother, you just don't do that.

Did she?

And if she didn't hurt him or commit any other real crime, under the law, they most likely can jail her for very long.

I just looked over it now.

I guess you're right. Knowing she has a history with the Pope, they should've taken the time to make sure she wasn't going to be at the mass. However, I don't even know if that's possible.

The security were holding behind too much.

Not surprised its happened, thats 2 big attacks on Italian people with power in under a month, the prime minster and now the pope, expect more security for Italian celebs/officials.

That's right, I forgot about the Prime Minister.

In the article flyingstar posted at the bottom it talked about how security analysts had been warning the guards the pope was too exposed. I think they've learned now :D

I'm not a security expert, but I'm one of those weirdos that does airsoft military simulations and have done close protection in games.

They really needed 2 in front, two by his side and 2-3 at the back. the protection from the video looks like its behind him, not beside him. Or the security is too far back/forward.

I agree, from the video, it looked like the guard had to launch from behind to stop the woman. He should've been right at the pope's side so she had no way of reaching the pope.

Probably the pope wants to be seen on camera as "in with the people" doesn't want to be surrounded by dudes in sunglasses and suits.

2nd attack this year on the pope IIRC at easter didn't someone grab onto the back of a trailer with him on it, they were like 1 m from dragging him off it.

I'm not sure, I wasn't aware of an attack on the Pope during easter..then again I don't watch the news very often.

And I can totally see how the pope would want to be "in" with the people, as he is the leader of the church, the one they look up to (most). But there's a fine line between him being in with the people and compromising his safety.

It doesn't matter. He's an elderly person, wether he be Pope or not, he deserves some respect.

Technically, he's NOT Italian. He's actually German just to clarify. Really, if the woman had mental problems, I suppose she thought it was a good idea. Hopefully she's learned from this.

I don't think security was a big problem.
There were people on her nearly before she got to him.

I have no idea what her motives were (if someone knows please tell me or pm me) but that was kinda crazy.

Security isn't huge because not many people attack the pope...if it were the president, that may be a different story.
