Lost in Flight

I once had the mindset of a young owl,
New to flight, but used to the ferocity of the storm.

I unchained my fettered wings and hooted
Deep into the black abyss
That was the Sunday night sky.

I peered ahead of me with insightful yellow eyes,
But saw nothing, nothing but a silver gray mouse
Creeping through the woods
Like a scoundrel in a dollar store.

Intrigued was I, but rather first,
I chose to look behind me,
So at a degree of one hundred and eighty
I spun my head around to see:

A thousand suns within the darkness,
Light had come so starkly, sparkling,
I was amazed, dazed, and fazed,
But still I knew I had to raise
Both wings of mine and take off flying.

So into the night, the brightly lit night,
I flew unhindered by wind or by fright,
But through a crossed airwave I felt myself losing
Control of my mind and my wings,
Air resistance.

I fell to the ground, right on top of the mouse
I’d seen hours ago,
The mouse let out a squeak,
As I opened my eyes,
Only to see that the mouse,
Like my world, was a lie:

All that I saw when I opened my eyes
Were deep, empty sighs
And shadow-cloaked guises,
Men within windmills
Simply passing the time.
