ok so heres the story(sorry if its in the wrong forum/section, feel free to move it or whatever) anways, so i was just wondering if anyone else gets growing pains of any sorts? i get them in my legs and feet and they are excruciating and i cant even walk sometimes. does anyone know of/use something to treat the pain, i take painkillers but they dont work, my mum give me leg rubs but they only work for a very short time. i really need something to make the pain go away because it stops me from working and going out with my friends any advice is welcomed. thanks guys

Yeh i used to get that... It was really horrible. Unfortunately, apart from heavy painkillers there isnt much you can do but wait it out. Get plenty of sleep (I know its really hard when your in pain) and take long hot baths, I find that they help.

It sounds really wierd but eating healthily can really help because a good diet is essential for muscle/bone growth and maintainence.

If you want any specific nutritional advice then just write back here. :)

^^You're not going to get medical marijuana for teenage leg cramps

Painkillers won't work. You get these cramps because the muscle is contracting.
Really the best way to prevent is to not be sedentary, and get more potasium in your diet.

I couldnt agree more!

I have had such pains at random since the age of around 14, theyre usually during the night and I wake in excruciating pain from them. To be honest I would say it feels like the veins are being pulled from the back of my legs it hurts that badly. I was told by the doctor to not exercise so much and rest my legs now and then as well as increase potassium in my diet.

All the best and I hope these go away for you, for some reason they havent stopped for me just yet :D

Yep, it's been said before. Potassium is a BIG help (you can find it in banana's, most commonly) and I often find that massaging the area helps a lot too.

Also, kind of a weird little bit of information, but it actually helped me when I was getting them. (This is gonna sound hokey, and bad, and whatever, but try it if you want) I used to use like, visualizations to help me get over them. And by that I mean, I used to visualize the pain as like, smoke of some colour I hated, then I'd imagine feeling better as a colour of smoke that I DID like, and I imagined the pain smoke leaving my body, while the other colour enters it. This won't work for everyone, some people can't visualize it that strongly, or whatever, but it helped me. I don't know if it was because I was distracted from the pain while trying to think of it, or what, but it could help, who knows.

I've had growing pains for about a week, and then they stopped. I really don't remember what I did to get rid of them, but they haven't returned yet.

Of course pain killers will help.. It says what they do in their name if it wasnt a big enough hint, I suggest anti inflammatorys; these will probably benefit you the most.

And yeh everyone is right, potassium is a major part of growing up because of its involvement in the role of signalling (linked to the brains and muscles..) Check out sodium/potassium pumps if you want a further detail but thats kinda degree level stuff.

Get more of these into your body;
Sodium (dont over do it, its in most foods - important for muscle contraction and relaxation)

Potassium (banana's are a great source but never eat like 3 in one go.. you will actually puke :P - Again important for signalling in muscles linked with the brain)

Calcium (Obviously milk, eggs ect.. - Plays a massive biological role of being a second messenger and regulates muscle contraction/relaxation within the cross bridge cycle)

Sorry I didnt go into specifics earlier.
