I'm in third-year university and whether or not it was necessary is only answerable in terms of whether you want marks. Some weeks I have several tests or research papers to hand it that I've been working on for most of the semester. Sometimes you'll get a hell of a lot of work while other times not so much. Take for example one course I have. Although we have the textbooks, the professor gives us extra research papers to read, tells us to read certain chapters in books we don't have so we need to go to the library or view it through an e-book, do various lab reports (all of which require research to support whatever findings we get), etc... . In second-year, I had one day where it was constant classes back-to-back from about 1 or 2 pm to about 8 pm, and then had to stay after that to work on some online quiz at campus. Sometimes it's hard but just remember, it's like a hill, once you do the hard work, it eases up.

And thats normal for Junior High, it was pretty much the exact same for me.

Just put your mind to it. It's really not that much. Just set deadlines for each of them and make sure you do them on time.

Very easy. Everyday I have 3 papers for Social Studies including at least half of a speech read from a famous person in the Era we are learning about.

Math is somewhat easy. Just 2 pages of Algebra each night.

Science. Design a rollercoaster ON google sketchup pro from Scratch. Blueprints and everything. 3 labs, 2 powerpoints, and 1 3 page report on Newtons' laws of Physics.

Language. Read.

Thats it for me.
