i think threads should only be open for a certain amount of time, instead of keeping the same thread up there for months.

No that's pointless threads can still be useful months or even years after they were created. Stickies for example have been here for months or years and still get posted it in.

If there is no reason to have the thread recreated we won't lock; such as a survey or very popular threads.

So your saying that you'd rather see the same old threads created again and again, day after day?
That's just pointless.

well there is a time limit in that we allow people to post in threads, but there are exceptions to that. for example, if you asked a question in the help & advice forums and then came back with an update a couple months later, then thats fine and we encourage that so more advice can be offered if necessary. so to answer the question, yes there is in theory a time limit system in place already for posting in threads. stickies, p101 polls and popular threads in other forums stay open for a long time, but thats simply because they are popular and don't get old. but for most other threads, once they reach a month old (2 weeks in p101) without being posted in, they will be closed by a mod if someone bumps them. hope this makes sense?

Perhaps the OP is referring to an automatic thread-closing feature, whereby all threads that have been inactive for over a specific amount of time are automatically locked, to save the hassle of detecting and locking individual bumped threads, which to my knowledge does occur rather often.
I have seen it used on other, comparatively larger forums.

If said thread is locked automatically because of no posts, then how would an OP do an update on a thread, if they want to?

The assumption is that after the specified time frame, the situation in question would have changed in a manner that would better warrant a new discussion, should one feel it necessary. One could always include a link to the previous relevant thread for reference purposes.
It may or may not be beneficial in context of this community. But it is only a suggestion.

Not all old threads need to get locked. This isn't a big forum and by having that time limit we'll be seeing a numerous amount of locked threads in the forums which is hideous.

So the free sexytime thread should get locked cos it's like 3 years old? I think not.
There are so many threads on here that keep going for months, if not years. There is no reason why any of them should be locked. Sometimes thread can be bumped from months ago without it being any bother. The threads that are bumped can just be locked, its no big deal.
Also having thread automatically locked would be a complete waste of server resources.
