i was thinking about this a lot, the most commonly spoken language in the U.S. is spanish. i always wondered why schools have spanish because everyday in school i hear everyone speak itexcept the american kids. i think we should have other languages like the asian culture espeically japanese because we get almost all our trading from them. besides it would help me understand more of what they are saying in the imported animes i have. (they suck at subbing XD)

Spanish to me seems to be the most practical language to learn in the United States.

Since there is such a large population of Mexicans, I think that spanish is apropriate. Also spanish is spoken in a lot of other countries.

English
French
Spanish
Russian
Arabic
Chinese
German
Japanese
Portuguese
Hindi/Urdu

this is a list of the worlds most important (not popular) languages.
this list includes importance based on number of primary speakers, secondary speakers, numbers and ppopulations of countries that they are used, number of the major fields using the language internationally and the economic power of the countries using the languages, not to mention the socio-literary prestige of the language.

as you can see, after english, french and spanish are the main languages of the world.
hinting they are the two most popular secendary language in the americas.

I think this is a smart decison by the schools to have these two languages, and I think that when choosing a second language you should keep these figures in mind.
If you live in america, I think spanish is the most valuble second languege.
canada would be french.
europe, french, russian, german, portuguese, arabic.
it all depends on what feild you want to work in the future.
also, note that china and india, using the chinese and the hindi/Urdu languages are emerging markets that are going to be playing more important roles in the future.
Japanese you can never go wrong in learning.
they have many jobs overseas that require good hands.
and the pay is usually very similer to western pay.

spanish is very popular because it derives from Latin and many words can be somewhat linked up between Spanish and English. Like el carro is car. I wouldnt hesitate to drop spanish if they offered Japanese, but you have to think, Japanese is one of the hardest languages to be able to speak/read/write because it is so different from english and the characters are so percise in the writing. it takes a much longer time to learn, but id also much rather spend the time to learn it. im gonna try and take it in college since my highschool doesnt offer it.

i think when it comes to languages, even though we may hate learning them and all that jazz, we need to learn them. like over here we have to learn Irish all the way through school. also on top of that we need to learn a modern European language to get into college and get your degree.

like we can not be going to other countries and expecting them to speak English, which i think its starting to move that way. also the more languages we know the less barriers that stand between us.

i believe spanish is important, not only does it further your own understanding of the world, but it can also help with your english like with suject verb agreement and such.

the most commonly spoken language in the U.S. is spanish.

the most commonly spoken language in the United States is not, i repeat, not spanish. it's english, in case u havent noticed. ;) spanish is only 20% spoken in the U.S, and most of the people who speak spanish, also speak fluent english. :) I dont think they should take it out of schools though.

btw- i dont take spanish, i take french and it's like 1000 times harder :(

also, the reason i think we take languages over here in the US is kinda like redcar's but also it is to just further ones mind. lerning a language adds the the knowledge we have and adds more culture and "spark" to our knowledge. and SunnyGurl, the reason that spanish does that kinda stuff is because it is derrrived from Latin which is the main reason for those things. that is why it is said that latin students may have an easier time for some parts of the SAT's

many languages are derived from Latin
If you can speak latin
you can pick up atleast 4-5 languages easy

Here in the UK French is a compulsory subject and kids have to learn it until GCSE.
At my school you can then choose either Spanish or German as an extra language after that, although some schools are different.
In the UK, French is the obvious choice as our countries are so close to each other and French is spoken in much of Europe.
Keep Spanish though, I take it and I love the language - it sounds so pretty. Plus, Spanish music is awesome. The country is cool too if you ever get the chance go there.

Sorry, didn't check date on posts
