I want to get a desktop what brand do you think is the best?

Custom built. ;)

Dell is usually a good brand, tough, reliable. They seem to install the least amount of crapware.
Compaq is up there as well, though, slightly more breakable, and more crapware.
HP is your next best bet, though has tons of crapware.
Do NOT get a Gateway, the crapware literately takes up more space than windows itself does, it's ridiculous. And the hardware tends to break within a year or two.

I think Dell are one of the worst.

Compaq/HP are generally ok. Acer are very good, Lenovo also good. If I ever got a branded PC I'd format it straight out of the box though, they always put useless shit on your PC. Dell are extremely bad for it.

I've had nothing but problems with our HP desktop, but everyone else says they are great. And, quite the opposite of everyone else, our Gateway desktop that we got in 2001 still runs without a hitch. And my new Gateway laptop runs brilliantly.

Lenovo/IBM are great though. Expensive for what you get, but they are very reliable. My IBM laptop from 2003 still runs, after a hard drive upgrade.

Acer seems to have very good reliability, though I don't have any experience.

If you feel like it though, you can build a custom PC; that is generally cheaper, and you know what hardware and software are on it.

I have a gateway pc and a gateway laptop and I have no crapware(as soon as I got it I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled vista from the restore disk) and it's not breaking down. I think they are actually good brands you pretty much get what you pay for. Never get an Emachines those are so shitty it should be a crime.

Acers brilliant, never had any trouble. Plus if anything should go wrong you have special options to reset to factory restore. Its simple too.

My Acer laptop is 3 years old and still going strong, it's had a massive amount of use also.

Old thread but what always runs fast and doesn't have a lot of crapware, a Mac. Also if you have an iPod or iPhone it is easier to use them with Mac. We are entering the post-pc time
