CHICAGO (Reuters) – Beverage can tops are still finding their way into the stomachs of some children, especially teens, despite being redesigned in the 1970s to keep people from swallowing them, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

A 16-year study at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center found 19 children had swallowed the safety tabs, which are designed to fold back but stay attached to cans for soda and other beverages.

"I think we all know if you fiddle with these stay tabs, you can easily break them off," Dr. Lane Donnelly, who led the study, told reporters at the Radiological Society of North America meeting in Chicago.

The study included children aged 1 to 18 at his medical center, but he suspects many cases go unreported.

Donnelly said he suspected children break off the tab, drop it into the soda can and inadvertently swallow the tab. When broken, the tabs have jagged edges that could perforate the stomach or intestine.

Since the tabs are made from aluminum, they are much harder to detect on an X-ray than coins, which babies and toddlers often swallow, Donnelly said.

He said parents should be aware of the problem and that beverage companies might consider a newer design that makes the tabs harder to break off.

As for the children in his study, none required surgery, although one was sent home with explicit instructions from the emergency department that read: "No sucking on can tops."

I thought it was interesting that it said "mostly teens" are the ones swallowing these things. I guess teens drink more soda than small children, on average... Still, though. Teens know better than to try to eat them and, really, what are the odds of accidentally swallowing one? You can't really drop the tab into the can unless you intentionally pull it off and drop it in. At least, I've never had one snap off on accident and then fall into the can. o_0

19 kids in 16 years isn't a whole lot, even when you consider that that's just one hospital. I thought it was interesting though haha.

But do you break them off on purpose and then drop them in, or do they accidentally fall in?

Because I have never had that happen, haha.

I just leave them on and, when I'm done drinking, I just snap them off and put them in the can to throw away. Swallowing them is a stupid mistake, and I've done it. Parents need to teach their kids not to do it.

I have a friend who whenever he's drinking from a can, he drops the tab in the drink. I never could figure out why you don't just take the thing off and toss it elsewhere or in the trash if it bothers you or just leave the thing on.

I actually prefer stabbing the top end of whatever can I'm drinking and suckling away at that.

It could pop off while you were drinking from the can couldn't it? :|

Not really. First, the tabs are put on there so if you want it to come off, you have to physically fiddle with it otherwise it's not coming off. Second, when you drink from the can, I assume the tab is down because if it's up then it's going to poke you in the nose. So if the tab is down and if you haven't fiddled with it, then it's not popping off. Third, assuming the tab was loose enough to pop off, if it goes into the can while you're drinking, then you're going to easily feel something brushing along part of your mouth. If that happens, then to continue drinking it you're probably going to filter the tab out so you don't swallow it. Overall, it's not going to pop off unless you take it off.

I always break the tab off and throw it in the trash, It just gets in the way of drinking. Why or how anyone would swallow it is beyond me.

Kids stupid enough to swallow these things should just be left to die. Natural selection at its best.

People are stupid. How could you not notice that there is a tab in your mouth? I just leave it on when I drink it. No need to take it off.
