It seems that every one around the holiday season gets uptight about cursing (he might go to hell if he says shit oh no!). So i thought i might as well start a little debate on it:)

Words do not cause any type of harm to the human body, nor do they to other living things on earth. Most people are in "fear" of saying these because they might "anger" their "god or gods" (no offense, but its true) but yet when they say the words nothing happens expect in their mind. People please tell me why in the flocking world i should not curse.

I do not think that peoples religious views are the main reason people object to swearing. Many people who do not hold beliefs in higher presence object to swearing.

Swearing is considered impolite due to our views on society, the fact that many curse words are designed to insult because we have made them that way.

Also no one forces you not to swear, just if you do thats your choice and people may react, treat you differently etc.

They generally have an offensive meaning or connotation. I generally don't find it that people don't swear for religious reasons. Hell, I used to golf with the pastor from my church until he moved and he swore...it wasn't much, but he did.

Words hold no power until you give them power.

thats a 100% right tim.

i have heard priests swear, the brother at my school swear and i have heard my grandpa, who has gone to church almost every week of his life swear.

the word profanity means to be done outside of temple. as long as you dont swear in church, god doesnt care. i was told that by my priest.

Swearing is fucking wrong! JK, I don't believe that swearing is morally wrong (even if it might be considered rude) for the same reason that I don't think homosexuality is; you are not doing anyone or anything any harm.

I don't curse, but I know a lot of people that do. Tim is pretty much right in what he said.

I haven't heard or met a single person who doesn't swear because it may offend the beings they worship. Instead, people, myself included, tend to not swear often because of moral reasoning and to adhere with the social norm of society and the place they're currently in. For example, if you're talking to a professor or future employer, you probably aren't going to say "oh fucking shit, I forgot to put that god damn thing on this fucking paper" but you're more likely to say it to friends comfortable around swearing in a relaxed environment. It's much more than simply religious beliefs.

As for whether it's wrong, well that's up to whoever is saying it and/or listening to it. It causes no harm in any way to oneself or to others but as I mentioned above, it's frowned upon depending heavily on the context and the listeners. However, you can argue any word can be a swear word. For example, when I say the word "desk", I think of a desk but I can just as easily replace that meaning to be a swear word, so the words only have the power we give them and likewise, we put restrictions on them. Hence, their subjective and no objective rules carved in stone about them.

There is nothing wrong with it. Some people just choose not to swear. It doesn't make you any more intelligent. I still fucking do it though.

It pisses me off when people can't fucking well go 3 words without swearing :P

It really does though. And to me, it does make the person seem less intelligent, as they can't find a better word to use than a swear. I curse every now and then, but no where near as much as one of my friends. I only use the occasional 'fuck' or 'shit' or 'damn.' I don't think words like piss and hell are bad though.... my parents do though.... it pisses me off :D

You can't really say that people who swear a lot(not like ten times in one sentence, but not like one every hour. I guess a lot is a bad way to put that, but it not's a occasionaly, let's put it at that.) don't know what words to say. I know a really smart guy and he swears a lot, and I'm pretty sure he knows plenty of words that say "instead". But when people swear like all the time, it makes themselves look like jackasses.

But anyway, no, I do not think swearing is bad. I mean, they are just words just like any other word. I mean, me myself, I don't swear a lot. I usually just say jackass, douche, fuck me/ fuck you and I don't know what else really.. lol.. I don't say a lot of "swear" words. I mean, I don't say damn, I say crap usually.

People who use words like that have no vocabulary at all is what my mum says... Not to say I haven't...

It is so annoying and unneccessary when people swear every other word. Although I have sworn I don't swear often, and most of the time no one can hear it, because it's undress my breath, or I am just thinking it, but that doesn't really count. I don't believe it to be morally wrong or anything unless you swear every other word.

Now that interets me; if they had no vocabulary, they wouldn't even be able to swear in the first place.

Meep the world!

Like Tim always says, words don't have meaning until you give them meaning.

Studies have shown that swearing is very good for your body. If you hurt yourself by accident, you encourage your body to be more resistant against pain. But you should never swear every minute just when you need to say it!

People who are offended by swear words need to understand the concept of context.

how does this belong in "ramblings of the wise?"

cursing is part of human vocabulary, who's to judge which words are offensive and what's not? if it's a word, it's meant to be said. there's a time and place for everything.
