Pupils at a school in Florida have been suspended after taking part in a "Kick a Jew Day".

Ten students at North Naples Middle School were sent home for a day after a girl told the head teacher that she believed she had been kicked for being Jewish, prompting further instances to come to light.

Florida passed strict anti-bullying laws last year and schools that do not do enough to stop it risk losing their state funding.

Margaret Jackson, the school's head teacher, has responded to the kicking incident by setting aside the first 20 minutes of each day to teaching students – aged 12 to 15 – about kindness, respect and ways of preventing bullying.

David Barkey of the Florida Anti-Defamation League said the organisation had been consulted over the incident.

"You are talking about an incident that has anti-Jewish bias if not anti-semitism. You have Jewish students being singled out, harassed and assaulted," he said.

Last year, four pupils were suspended from a middle school in St Louis over a "Hit a Jew Day" in which one Jewish student was slapped in the face.

The "day" had been the culmination of a "Spirit Week" organised by pupils which included "Hug a Friend Day" and "Hit a Tall Person Day".

Some believe the idea for such behaviour originally came from the satirical cartoon show South Park which featured a "Kick a Ginger Day" in an episode.

I love how you can have a "Hit a Tall Person Day" but not a "Kick a Jew Day"

This is the exact same thing that happened last year.

There's also "Kick a Ginger Day," which was mentioned in the article, which most often you don't hear anything about in the news. I've never heard of "Hit a Tall Person Day," but apparently it exists. xD Although, the local news station did a report on the ginger deal earlier this week or last week, whenever that day was, I guess there was an issue at some schools.

I guess the issue with "Kick A Jew Day," is that it's a 'racial' thing. (I put that in quotes because you don't have to be of a certain race to be a Jew, but I don't believe that religionist is a word. So, racist will fit for now. xD) Picking on someone for being tall or ginger is just as bad, but I guess when it's against Jews then it becomes more of a "hate crime"?

I just find it amusing that violence towards people for being physically different is somehow more acceptable than violence towards people for being a different religion...

It is amusing, in a sad sort of way.

Kicking people is not friendly. And ten students being suspended for kicking this girl? Yeah, I'd feel like I had a lot of friends if ten kids had kicked me throughout the course of the day for being Jewish.

Kids kicking each other for whatever reason in school is wrong.

They should be punished.

Sad, that children are ignorant enough to do something like this.

I feel her, I hate being kicked for 'being a ginger', when I have GOLD/ORANGE hair, and no freckles. -_- People will bully you just for fun.

Are we going to start suspending people if they pinch someone for not wearing green on St. Patrick's Day, too? It's a bit fucking ridiculous.

people at my school were talking about "kick a ginger day" and they also have random days like "grab an ass day" or "make fun of a blonde day" I dont get it...

We've already had kick a ginger day here, hug an Asian, hug a cute girl, kick an LG day.

They made an announcement about it at school.
