OMG the term ''self-mutilation'' makes me feel so ill.... like physically sick. It just sounds so gross. At school we study mental dissorders [it's an optional class] and the teacher was talking about SH but he called it Self-mutilation and it turned my stomach.
I dont know why, it just sounds so gross... and so dramatic, when i think of 'mutilation' i think of people cutting limbs off and shit like that.. but he was only taking about cutting and burning (not that that's not a big deal but there's BIG difference)

So i was wodnering, is there a way of saying 'self-harm' that you really dont like? And if so why? Just curious.

to me, it is self mutilation, you are messing up the body you were given.

I hate when people are talking about suicide and they say "Blew their fucking brains out" thaat pisses me off really really badly

i dont like the term 'self mutilation' either but that's what cutting and burning is so we will just have to deal with it.

Self mutilation sounds truly awful. I avoid using it if I can but there are some instances where you can't.

Personally, I prefer the term "self injury" over all others.

I don't like Self Mutilation either. To me, its too extreme of a term.
I don't mind Self Injury or Self Harm, I've also heard Self-Inflicted Violence.

I dislike the term "self-mutilation", but honestly, to me it sounds a lot better than "cutting" or "cutter" or just "cut". It makes me feel so guilty and upset. The other synonyms make it sound a little more professional or scientific. They're easier for me to handle without getting too emotional.

Not nearly as bad as para-suicidal, that shit sends the wrong message..

The term is accurate (for me) grammatically and I think it bears exactly the right meaning.

Para-suicidal? Who would use that sort of term? It must be a regional thing.

Which term? "Self- mutilation"?

Gotcha. I don't know. The connotation of the word "mutilation", for me, is like the supposed alien abductions of cows and the mutilation of their flesh. Only, with self placed in front of it. It just freaks me out.
I also have issues with the word "emo". Probably for the same reasons I dislike the term "cutting". Although "cutting" is apt, considering that's all I do, it just seems that people put the two words together in order to come up with an insult to spew at me whenever they don't understand what I'm doing or why I do it.

I dont really mind Emo that much... but i have a little sister who listens to emo music and dresses as an emo and every keeps saying she isn't an 'emo' coz she doesn't cut... i hate emo music and dress in pin-stried suits and turtle-necks and because i cut i'm an emo??? That i dont understand, how can someone hate the clothes and the music but be 'emo' coz they cut and yet someone who loves the clothes and the music but doens't cut can't be 'emo'?? Confused.com!!

People are branded with 'emo' because stoerotypically they are soposed to cut. If you are an 'emo' then people think that is right, you have to cut or you cant be called one. It is a shame in that sence that people who cut for the 'right' (not like there really is a right) reasons are then branded with the same tag.
Personally i dont think that we shouldnt be given a name like cutter or something because that sort of makes it ok in some sence. I dunno how to put it. Like we have been branded. We may have that tag for the rest of our lives. Also no one that i know uses any other term than self harm. That is probally more aceptive than 'self-mutilation'

I tend to stick with SI or even SH. I really don't elaborate unless I am talking to someone I know won't judge.

i dislike it too. Any word sucks really... cutter, emo it all hurts. we should not let the scars, cuts, and burns define who we are. yes we may do all th above... but there is more to us then just that so there is no reason for anyone to call someone that

Self Injury, Self Harm, Self Mutilation, Self Abuse, Self Directed Violence..

I don't like any of them, and I only use Self Injury and Self Harm.
