An afternoon breeze
Sings merrily to the dawning sun,
Just grazing the leaves
Yet sending them up in the air
In a swirling fury.

The leaves, one by one,
Form a cyclone
And twirl on down the sidewalk,
Picking up speed
As they pass the empty park bench
The lilacs in the damp soil,
Smiling in full bloom.

As the breeze dies down,
And the park bench finds a patron,
The leaves fall to the ground,
One by one,
Forming a straight line,
From the chipped pavement
Of the third tile
On the park walkway
To the last tile
Where a bird is perched
On a nearby evergreen
Singing,
In harmony,
With the dying
Afternoon breeze.An
