View Full Version : Abnormal Psychological Disorders...Should I speak up?

I have a teacher who knows a LOT about Psychology. She's super cool and everything and willing to listen. We're currently doing projects where we each pick a subject and make a poster. It sent a chill down my spine when i heard her say "self-mutilation, or as you guys probably would call it cutting". She knows a lot about that disorder..and I kind of have questions. I've been asking some pretty "odd" hypothetical questions, and she seems like she's becoming suspicious. Thing is, I just want to know the answers, and she has them. I'm a bit afraid to tell her about how I used to have problems... I'm on her good side and she even said I'm one of the students she looks forward to seeing everyday because I have so much to offer. I don't know if it might change how she thinks of me. But I've figured out that it's really difficult asking these questions because I can't exactly tell her why I want to know.
What should I do? Like get it over with and tell her so if i get questions I can ask them without being all weird about it?

It's hard to explain.
I understand people on here know a LOT.
It's kind of different.
It would also help knowing I had an adult who understood me.
I'm not sure...

"self mutilation" isn't a pleasant title to be stuck with
its on my perm health record for multiple hospitalizations
If you trust her and you have questions then ask them
Shes a teacher, shes dedicated her entire life to teaching the next generation
she has a duty to report if she thinks you're in danger or hurting yourself or others, the same as a psychologist or psychiatrist would be.
But there's nothing wrong with wanting answers to questions
you should never feel ashamed to ask them
I'm a psych major
If you have any questions that you're really scared to ask her
then feel free to ask me
If I can't answer them, I'll sift through journals, books, etc.. or ask my professors

I can understand that it is hard to talk to anyone let alone someone you know. It is good that you can have someone that you can talk to face to face. Ask her the question, she isnt there to judge you but to teach you. If you tell her not to judge you and that you cant really tell her why you want the question then she will understand. Mabie if you do theproject about it then you may find a deeper understanding of the title and things to do with it.

you should try to ask her the questions, but if you feel like you can't ask feel free to ask members of VT.

I did it, and I don't feel bad at all :) What I was worried about was her getting suspicious about me asking questions about cutting addiction.
