Personally, if it looks ok and smell ok I eat it :) No point in wasting food just because of some date.

What about all you's lot? :)

I don't care about the date

The smell speaks a lot more.
I've thrown out so much meat and dairy because it smelled horriable, but somehow noone noticed.

Umm, damn, I'm going to sound like a pathetic silly bitch now, thanks andy xP

But, yeah, even if its on the date, I get suspicious. 1 day out, and I would through it in the bin, no questions asked. My dad's a little more normal so sometimes it stays a little longer in the house, but me sure as hell don't touch it :D

Haha xD

Well most things start to look/smell a bit dodgy on their last day anyway, especially stuff like break milk and cheese. But tinned or frozen food is ok for a few months :D

As soon as that date is up, its in the trash. I'm always scared that I'm going to get sick, lol, my sense of smell is all out of whack, always has been.

For bread, I don't look at the date...it sometimes gets moldy before the date...I look for mold. For milk, I get a little nervous on the use by day, but I'll usually drink it. After the use by date, I'll use it for cereal and chocolate milk, but I won't drink it straight.

I scrape mold off bread. Because I fuckin love bread. Haha I don't drink milk, ever. Cheese I scrape any nasties off and eat it. I don't eat meat if it smells funky. haha

The date is just a guideline, I think. As far as milk goes, I'll trust it for a few days after the expiration date as long as it still smells and tastes fine. Usually we don't have milk in the fridge for long after it expires, though, if it even makes it that long. The trick is to always glance at the dates and grab the latest one, usually there's more than one batch/shipment/whatever, and thus different expiration dates. That way you're less likely to have the milk spoil before you can drink it. xP

Meat, we mostly keep frozen unless we're planning to use it within a few days, so I trust it for quite a while. If it's not frozen, though, uncooked meat is ok until it starts to smell funny or it's been as much as a week past the expiration date.

All leftovers don't stay in the fridge more than about a week. After that it's clear that no one wants to eat it, and it won't stay good for too much longer.

i'm very careful of things like bread, milk, meat etc. i got good at this when my parents were away recently. as long as its all been stored correctly, things are usually ok up to the date. after that i will always have a close inspection. but then with something like milk, it goes down the sink regardless after 2 days past the date.

Basically this.

If I see any mold anywhere though, in the trash, unless someone else is interested.

The date's not too important. But normally around a week after, it's either gone or no good. So.....yeah

If it's smelly and/or looks bad, it hits the trash.

Looks bad, not eating it. Smells bad, not eating it. Feels or tastes bad, not eating it.

I give my food about two days after its expiration date, before I throw it out. Generally, that never happens with the foods I buy that could expire, though.

I'll look at the date, and smell and look at the food. Then ill think about who its been kept and if I think its OK ill eat it. :P If not, the bin is its new home. :P For most foods maybe 3 days? For meat and that stuff maybe a day.

Milk: No more than 24 hours after the date.

Meat: It's mostly in the freezer so we don't really pay attention to it.

Bread: Same as meat. We put it into the freezer until the other loaves are gone.

Eggs...umm...we barely eat eggs so..yeah..into the bin!

Dates mean nothing

Smell it - if something is truly bad for you to eat it'll smell very bad

Stuff with mold.. Well I've cut off the mold from some things and ate them anyway.

If I have some bread left that's about to expire and I got nothing to eat it with I shove it in the freezer and usually fry it later on the pan with some eggs x.x

If milk starts to go bad I leave it out in a bowl so I can make pancakes out of it later

And so on and on - if your family doesn't have money to throw.. Well rather buy stuff (read food) whenever you want, you pick up on these things but TBH I think being wasteful shouldn't be excused by anything

Basically
if it smells ok, looks ok, and tastes ok i will eat it.
the only thing im really cautious on is milk
but even if it's past the date i will have a tiny little sip just so my taste buds can get the taste, if it has a funny taste then i spit and chuck the bag away.

I wont eat anything which is clearly off, I will however have food which smells and tastes fine after the best before date. Things like milk I rarely have after the best before date and very rarely will I eat bread that has passed more than 1 day after the best before too.

It depends on what it is. If it's packaged meat, milk or eggs never. It's just something you do as a chef but if it's anything else and it seems ok, then you are all set!
