We've had visitor messages in profiles before and had big problems with the privilege being abused, which is why we're not likely to bring them back in the future.
If you feel like reading it, we had a discussion about this not too long ago, which you can find here (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=55470).

Just reading over that other thread, is there a way to say hide it from users under a number of posts? Or time, or time and posts? So they can't see it... ? Idea?

Well, the problem wasn't with new members not knowing the rules, or anything we could really fix by limiting it to members with a certain post count. We were able to do that with album photos because a lot of the inappropriate pictures are posted by new members who didn't know the rules about shirtless photos, etc.
A lot of the problem with visitor messages was with members carrying on some pretty inappropriate conversations back and forth in their profiles, as was brought up in the other thread. Though I don't recall exactly, I'm pretty sure it wasn't limited to just the newer members.
Personally, I don't see the need for them anyways. If you want to talk to someone you can PM them, You don't need to converse through little visitor messages. I also don't see why we really need to post, "Hiiii, haha, I'm posting on your profile!" for everyone we know either (and when you rule out conversations that's about all that's really left).
It seems like way too much trouble and potential for problems for something that has no real use.

Why don't the visitors stop being lazy and make an account?
Then they can add the person they want to talk to, and PM them.
Am I missing something? That seemed blatantly obvious..

No, visitor messages are left by members, unregistered guests wouldn't be able to do that kind of thing. It's like on Myspace, or Facebook, or other such social networking sites when you can leave a message on someone's profile. So it's even lazier than not making an account--these people already have the means to PM their friends. xP

So I did have the wrong end of the stick.
Well that's even worse, why would you want to do that lol.

Agreed, no offense hugslut, but by weighing up the pros and cons, it seems to me to be rather redundant.

Agreed....It does seem kind of pointless when you can just PM the person.
