View Full Version : Replying to Threads

Recently, I've seen a problem with posting... Members will read through all of the posts, and then click the quick-reply button on the last post to use the quick reply. You should not do this unless this is the post you are replying to. If you are replying to the main topic, press the quick-reply (or the reply) button in that post. This makes viewing and processing threads/posts easier and more understandable. I encourage all of you to look change your display mode to Hybrid Mode rather than Linear because of this new aspect. This will show you what I'm talking about.
So if all of you would please do this, it would help us all out: Just read through the thread and think about what post you would like to reply and/or add-on to. Then, simply click the reply/quick-reply button in that post.
I will try to develop a "tips and tricks" kind of guide for using this new forum in the future and I will revise and add this part into it. Please be patient for this, as I still have a lot to do (include the Avant Browser Guide).
Note: This thread will remain a sticky for only one month (probably less).
Thank you all :D

I'm confused why does it matter?
like why is it that big of a deal
if i want to do a quick reply to say the thread starter but the threads three pages long then i have to read all of it go back to the begining click the "quick" reply on his/her post and then type mine?
or i go advanced
which would probably be faster
if we want to quote a spicific person then we use the quote button
if not then just the quick reply to reply to the general topic
whats wrong with that?

I've noticed no problem. What happens when a user doesn't do that?

First of all this is just a request, Cody...
Now, if you've already read the thread, then of course, you don't have to read it again. Just read what you need to and then select which post you want to reply to. I don't think it's that hard. If you want to reply to the thread starter, then you can just click the 1 and be brought to the start of the thread, then you can click on reply. It takes no more than a second or two if you have DSL/cable. The upside to this is that we will be making use of the quick reply button and in doing so, Hybrid Mode might become popular. Furthermore, if you use Hybrid Mode, you can just click the post you want to reply to, it will show up and then you can click the reply button.
It's just that simple. :)
I'm not telling, I'm just asking...
Please give it a change, eh? :canadian:

See, because you hit the reply button in my post, I can clearly see that you were replying to me. If you replied using Cody's reply button, then I would have to either assume you were questioning Cody about the many things he brought to mind, or you were asking me. Nonetheless, I'd have to do inferring...
We have that reply button there so it can activate the quick reply box and vBulletin will know what post you are actually replying to. This can enable it to automatically quote the post and will allow Hybrid/Threaded Mode users to easily see what's what.
If you don't do that, nothing bad will happen. We just won't be taking advantage of the software. Nothing will change. Posts will keep getting piled into one another in an unorganized fashion and vBulletin will want to murder us all... (well, maybe not that last part).
Anyway, I'm just asking all of us to try this. Let's take advantage of this great software! :D

In Linear mode, there is nothing wrong, and it is, in my opinion, easiest to follow.

Linear is the easiest and that's why it's default. I didn't say that you had to switch your display mode, I just suggest it. But fine...
To the people that can actually carry out this complicated series of tasks, I truly thank you.

I'm sorry Kiros, but I’m still not getting it.
I'm in linear mode. To post I simply click the Post Reply button on either the top or the bottom of the page. But now I must click the 1 to go to the beginning page only to press the same button? How much do you see in that admin chair of yours?
Now you're saying that just because we have software, we should use it. Some might like this idea of hybrid mode, but I frankly don't get the big deal about it. I think it's good that you pointed this option out as alot of us are getting used to vBulletin and some new members are getting used to posting in a forum. If hybrid mode became popular, then what about linear? It's not a popularity contest and people fool around with computers all the time. They would find hybrid or maybe even threaded mode and like it better.
Can't I just do what I regularly do? At the end page, let's say 3, I just click Post Reply at the bottom. And when I want to reply to what another member said, can I just click quote or just mention their name if it was the last post?
A couple more things:
I really don't get the idea of a Quick Reply. It's probably going to take the same amount of time exept I can't preview my post without going advanced. If I use that Post Reply button then I'd just automatically go advanced.
And lastly,
To the people that can actually carry out this complicated series of tasks, I truly thank you.You or another member is probably going to get all over my butt for this, but that sounded kind of sarcastic. You had all of these smiles in your other posts and then just got...nasty at the end. You would thank us for accessing a little bit of software? And you also said that it was simple. Then you go ahead and say complicated, italicized. It's like you're acting like you're smarter than we are. It just sounded nasty. I don't want to sound like Activate at this link: http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5437&page=2
I don't want to sound horrible and ruin my reputation with you Kiros, but I can almost feel some member sinking back into their seat feeling bad and swearing to themselves that they'll never do it again. I kind of feel manipulated myself
Some of these things probably make perfect sense to you and maybe you're just frustrated that nobody's getting it so you say something that to put this whole thing behind you and you'll never have to think about it again.
I'm sorry if I’m not getting it and I'm sorry if this whole thing sounds like one giant peice of spam. I really am :(
I've been kind of out of sorts with myself lately and I feel insecure about posting this.

Thank you. I'm glad to see that you're so concerned for the forum. Though all I have said was never meant to manipulate anyone. I have asked a simple request of everyone. No one could understand anything. I also said that this was complicated in terms of it was not actually complicated. In no way did I ever say I was smarter than everyone. It's clicking a little button for Heaven's sake... In all my other posts I use smilies to convey emotion and in that last post, I felt awkward having to explain something for the fourth time. It's really not that hard to understand. I'm not defending nor attacking anyone or anything here, I'm just asking. I'm sorry if I offended you by saying thank you, and I don't see why you would call me nasty and try to diminish my morale...
Anyway, this isn't a flame so please don't take it as such. We try to keep a tight community here, so your opinions and thoughts are welcome, just don't make an attack out of them.

I see what you saying, and i think it is a good idea. The only problem is that by setting the defalt mode to linear is that nobody is going to realy want to use the quick reply feture (i think that's what u called it) unless it benefits them. And from what i am getting from this thred and my own intuition is that most people don't use Hybrid or threaded mode so it won't realy benifit them.

Quick reply is suppose to benefit everyone in that it is quick. This is why we have the quick reply box enabled - otherwise, we could turn it off to improve performance. Activating the quick reply box is the part that I'm asking everyone to try to do differently: just click the "Quick" button in the post you want to reply to rather than just the top or bottom post everytime. This lets vBulletin (as well as other users) know who you are replying to without a doubt. If you're replying to the last poster, then by all means, you can simply click the last "Quick" button and it will still get the point through. When you want to preview what you've wrote, all you have to do is hit Go Advanced. If you don't want to preview, then all you do is hit Post Quick Reply.
If you reply using the "Post Reply" then you don't even have to worry about changing anything, as there's only one way you can reply using that.

Alright, thanks Kiros. It took that one for me to get it
I'm sorry for saying all that stuff in my last post, and like I said, I've just been feeling weird lately. Like an identity crisis or something. I put alot of drama into my last post, and I'm sorry. I get what you're saying now.
~~Thx
