The word emo, I absolutley HATE this word. First off, when I was in 6th grade people told me that I was "emo" and that i cut myself just because i wore black cloths.
I never cut myself before a few days ago. About a year before this i fell into dpression for awhile, i would sit on my couch and randomly start to ball my eyes out. the other day i felt the same way, i dont know why i felt like this. my girlfriend cut herself and she said it made her feel better, so i did about 5 small cuts on my leg and felt a little better, but now i ALWAYS want to do it.
SOOO, anyway, my best friend when i showed him the scars he understood cause he takes me serously, but when my other 2 friends saw them they laughed and called me "emo". that word pisses me off

Yes, the widespread misuse of the term is extremely ignorant and unfortunate.
However, you should take comfort in the fact that this phenomena exists almost solely within the pre-teen and teenage community. Very few older individuals I've spoken to, excluding teachers, have any clear idea of what the word means at all. Even if they do, people grow out of it.
It's one of those things that 'get old' quite easily.

Would you prefer emotional? All emo is is a shorter version of emotional and I have to say that people who cut are overly emotional....the term fits....you just hate it because you're in denial about being emotional.

There's quite alot of difference between emo and emotional, I admit to being emotional, but teenagers use 'emo' as some one who hates life, is gay, listens to screamo, wears skinny jeans, cuts themselves and shows it off, etc. That's what the stereotype is.

That is undoubtedly the stereotype but the OP implied that the word its self was being used incorrectly, which is false considering the circumstances.

Ah, but he said they were refering to his as emo. I've been called emo, and they did not mean 'emotional', they meant an emo person. Which is just rude, since alot of people who're like that don't even cut.

Well, I've been called that too. I hate sports, I have relatively long hair that often covers one eye, and for a time most of my wardrobe was black.
The reason it was incorrect to call me Emo was because I'm not very emotional by any stretch. If you are cutting yourself, you clearly are. And as far as the stereotype of an Emo goes, well, I just don't know anything else about this person so they may fit the mold perfectly.

Exactly...
Labeling is always going to exist...ALWAYS. Get used to it. Either accept your label or better yet challenge your label.

No offense, but that is called "denial" at least in my opinion.

Well i walked a past a group of girls the other day and they said something about emos. I turned around and realised they wernt talking about me :)
Anyways, The teenage sterotype for emos is already stated above, it dosnt matter what the acutal meaning of the word means everyone knows how teenage kids use it.
Anyways, you must not get used to this feeling! It will take over you, your mind everything. In the summer you will not be able to wear shorts, t-shirts, whateva. Really it is a bad idea so please dont start.

She means you can't wear revealing clothes if you have a lot of scars from cutting yourself.

I really hate the word emo too. It makes you feel no longer like a human, like 'emo' is a different species.

I ment that it donsnt matter who you are and what you are branded by cutting is still cutting and self harming.
You said that you had only done it for a couple of days so again you should just stop.
(hence why i said what i said you wont be able to stop soon!)

Listen this labeling will always exist in society. You will have the jocks, you will have the preps, you will have the geeks and you will have the emotional. If you exhibit signs of emotional distress, you cut yourself. You cry in public places, people are going to call you emo. The truth hurts, it will always hurt. Just don't let anyone tell you, your something that your not.

Yeah, i get called emo ALL the time. Loads of people are finding out about my cuts all up both arms, but i have no intension of stopping. I was going to but then i cancelled the counsillor so i can carry on cutting
You should try and stop, dont let it get as worse as mine, you will never be able to stop then. One day you might cut the wrong place and hit a vein, then next thing you know, your dead. I know your probz thinking thats rich comin from me but its true. Try and stop. You and your girlfriend could both agree on stopping and at the same time and tell eachover your problems and you could confort eachover. BUT also if you choose not to stop, you must no that your 110% NOT an emo. People just think that coz most emos cut themselves but they also have a different style from people. Just ignore people if they call you that xxxxx

For me, the meaning of "emo" is fucktard and poser.
Those who call themselves emo or attempt to be emo are just idiots. They set themself up for ridicule and seek attention for being so emo and depressed. There is no meaning for emo that isn't negative and wrong. It has no fucking meaning. I hate the labelling and I hate posers. Grow a pair and be real.

Just to say (and I apologise if it's been said already) but "emo" doesn't stand for emotional. It's a style. A genre of music and a fashion sense.
Which is what makes the word so pathetic to be used against someone. I get it all the time, but I don't let it bother me. I'm better than those that try to hurt me, and I know this because I don't go out of my way to hurt someone, especially if they've done nothing to deserve it.
Try not to let them get to you. Hold your head high and ignore it. They'll get bored sooner or later.

Ok, so emos are generally little pussy bitches (guys and girls) who can't handle what the world throws at them, SO they separate themselves from society (the society that is too harsh and they hate it :(). And further more, they complain about how everyone thinks they are different and they are weird, yet they bring it upon themselves and stand out. THIS WORLD IS TOO HARSH!!! :( :( :( :(
Grow a fucking pair....this world will chew you up and spit you out if you are weak and emos are obviously weak...God, I can't fucking stand them.

I'm not getting into a fight about this, cause really, it's rather pathetic. But if you are sad enough to judge someone by a stupid stereotype and not actually get to know the person under all the camouflage, then it's your loss and those people are better without your comments, cause they are insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Emo does stand for emotional. It started with over emotional music, later labeled as Emo. And then spread to include those who fit into that "scene" or listen to said music.
Since it does in fact mean emotional, emotional people are EMO, but that's been stated already.
And frankly I agree with theOperaGhost, we're running out of room in the world for a bunch of over-privileged, western brats just whining and cutting themselves when in reality the majority lead great, comfortable lives and just need the extra attention.
