I have an Acer Aspire One netbook. Today, when I turned it on, only the fans came on, no screen, no nothing except the fans. My sister's techie BF had come over, so I got him to fix it. I already new that it was a problem with the BIOS because it didn't even boot, but I wasn't exactly sure what was wrong. He found that the BIOS was corrupted, so he installed the updated BIOS(google it to find out how) and it ran fine. Would there be any specific reason why this would have happened, or was it just a coincidence? Is there any way to prevent this from happening again?

It was probably just a fluke.
BIOS's normally don't get corrupted.

UPDATE! So My Acer got a nasty virus. It negated the effects of and infected my antivirus, and apparently it had corrupted some windows files and I couldn't get past the "welcome, loading your personal settings" screen. After trying a few different things, my sis's BF booted KUBUNTU off of his flash drive so that we could save my pics and other stuff. He had devised a device so that we could run a cd drive from my acer(since it doesn't have a disc drive), and use the repair function on a windows XP cd that he had. That didn't work, so he fully installed Kubuntu on my comp. At least it is now virus free! It'll take a lot of getting used to though. By the way, does anybody know how to run Firefox on Kuuntu? When I run the installer it says that it is already installed, but I can't find where to run it.(Quite a wall O'text here!)

Should be in your KDE menu under the section labled 'Internet'.
If not, try running it from command line 'Firefox'.
If that fails, make sure it's really installed by typing 'sudo apt-get install firefox' in command line.

Well now, I can't do ANYTHING in kubuntu exceptlog in and shut down.:P I was changing some of the appearence settings and somehow I found a glitch and now when I log in it shows the loading screen and then fades to black except for the cursor. I can run terminal, but nothing else. I'll just have to reinstall it!

well, it turns out that it was just set to a appearance scheme that kubuntu couldn't handle. I managed to change it back, and I can use my computer again! I was able to install firefox too after I downloaded a debugging pack. Only problem that I have now is that I can't hear any audio, through the built in speakers, or with headphones. When I go to System Settings -> Multimedia and test the sound card which appears like this: HDA Intel (ALC286 analog) and click test I can hear sound. In that list, there is another thing labeled PulseAudio. When I select that and hit test it says something like "PulseAudio doesn't work, falling back on HDA..... Does anyone know how to fix this?
