I personally prefer Canon for two main reasons:

1) I learnt how to take good pictures on canon equipment

2) I prefer how canon cameras handle plus I know pretty well how they behave

Nikons do have their good points though, they're meant to be very good at handling low light / high ISOs.

Isnt this more a question of who owns a Canon or a Nikon, I would guess few people will have owned both and be in any real position to make a comparison.

I think that is pretty much what it boils down to really. I grew up using Canon equipment so it's what I'll naturally go to and it would be vice versa for people using Nikon to learn with.

Generally It really just comes down to personal preference, I've used both a Canon and a Nikon and the only real difference seemed to be the way they are laid out.

At school, they've always used Nikon and I've never doubted the quality/the ability to use it when I've never used SLR's before.

Cannon is actually over all the better brand and product however Nikon is better value for the price. I eventually want a Cannon but I am planning for Nikon D3000 right now.

If you really want price-competitive cameras go for a Pentax k-m or something. The only non-grey-market DSLR under $500.
HOORAY

There are other options. Pentax make great cameras and even better lenses. Want to learn photography - get a K1000, ebay, peanuts, wonderful camera. You will learn more from that than you ever can with a digital.

Cannon all the way. Although, I personally don't consider myself a photographer with my 10 megapixel point and shoot. It's just easy to carry around and takes good group pictures of friends.

I have a Canon Rebel XS so I'll have to say Canon only because I've never used a Nikon. My friend's mom has a Nikon so I might have to ask to try hers out at some point. As for point and shoot cameras, I'd have to go with Sony :P.

I haven't had a Nikon. Though, if anyone knows both of them, can anyone recommend me an excellent professional camera? I'm not worried about price, just quality.

I currently have a Cannon Powershot SX20 IS

Taking up most of the functions that made the success of the Nikon D3, D3s marks a milestone in the history of photography: it is indeed the first DSLR to sport the record "push" sensitivity of 102 400 ISO. Superbly constructed, with an excellent viewfinder and a top-level autofocus system, it is ideal for DSLR for the pros, in particular for reportage and sport photography.

It comes down to what you want to do with it
they're both wicked cameras
it comes down to tailoring it for what you would be doing with it

Every camera by one of those two producers fills each other's misses. You just choose the one that fits you. There's no better or worse between those two, it's like comparing an Audi to a BMW, they are the same quality, the only thing that differs them is the buyer, that will choose one or an other out of his personal love with one or the other.
By the way, it's Canon. With one 'N'.

I have always used nikons. I had an N100 back in the film days. My first DSLR was a D60. Now I own a D90, a D200, and a D300s. I like nikon because I am familiar with the layout and I already have so many Nikkor lenses. I also own a Canon 50D and a Rebel T2i. Canon bodies are very durrable but they don't perform as well in low light or shoot in as wide a Color gamut as the Nikons do. But Canon bodies usually shoot faster(FPS) and shoot better video than Nikons do. As for which one is better, it all depends on witch feels best in your hand really. (and how much money you are willing to spend)

I love my little Panasonic. It's not the best but it's good enough for me. When my photography improves I'll probably invest in a Nikon SLR, but that will require further looking into n.n
