New Zealand man Joseph Erueti, 72, was turning in his grave - literally - as his burial took an upsetting turn.

His widow Zandra Thompson, from Hamilton on the North Island, and her family were mourning their loss at his funeral during the week when his casket turned over in his grave as it was lowered into the ground at the waterlogged Newstead Cemetery.

It first floated, then turned over completely.

As bubbles and water gushed up around the coffin, a Simplicity Funeral Directors official took off his shoes and jumped into the grave, the New Zealand Herald reported on Saturday.

He could turn the casket only 45 degrees as mourners watched in horror.

"It was heartbreaking and it was disgusting. To see your husband, the man you have been with for years, turn over in his grave was just horrific," Ms Thompson said.

"We don't believe in bringing someone back up, but I was getting ready to jump down myself.

"It was just disgusting."

Mrs Thompson was escorted from the cemetery while a grandson made sure Mr Erueti was not buried with a list.

Cemetery staff pumped the water out of the hole and the Hamilton City Council later apologised.

I'm agreeing with Kodie here. Ever since this was posted, I've been confused about this the entire time. So, they put him a grave that was flooded? Why? Was he a sailor?

That's why the grave was flooded. xP I'll admit that it does indeed sound like quite a lot of water, I don't know what they expected was going to happen. You can only postpone burial so long, though, and I guess they felt like it was going to go smoothly but it didn't.

Yes, by why be buried in a water filled grave?

It does sound pretty stupid to have gone ahead with burial if the grave was full of water like that. Must have been horrible for the family.

That's more than an Epic Fail. It so epicly fails, "Fails" has to start with a PH.

What did they think was going to happen the coffin would sink because I'm guessing it was made out of wood and as far as I'm aware wood floats

Yeah, but the heavier an object is, the less likely that it will float. You're talking about a casket here along with a body inside it. The body is nothing but dead weight (no pun intended). So you can imagine that something like that would be close to almost 200 pounds or even more.

I would have been like, "lolwut?!?!" for a second and then probably would have gotten scared.
