Yeah, it's pretty nice for the entry level programmer.
Teaches people how to think in steps, rather than 'big-picture'.
But, if Alice appeals to you, then why not try Microsoft Visual Studio Express for now? You can still program graphically, but you can do alot more with it.
Then once you get the hang of MSVSE, you can see if your school offers membership in the MSDNAA (Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance), lets you download a bunch of development-related software for free, from Microsoft. (Such as the FULL version of Visual Studio, and even Windows 7)
Anyway, yeah. Alice is pretty sweet. :P
