A South Australian primary school has banned Year 6 and Year 7 students who are "boyfriends or girlfriends" from hugging.
Largs Bay Primary School has outlawed the displays of affection over fears it may set a bad example to other students, Adelaide's The Advertiser reports.
Has the school gone too far? Should hugging be banned? Share your thoughts with us.
"Hugging is not banned (between friends) ... but we do discourage displays of affection in the schoolyard among students in Years 6 and 7 who have a boyfriend or girlfriend at the school," principal Julie Gail told the newspaper.
"We want our older students to set a strong example for younger students at the school."
But some parents are outraged by the move, saying the so-called hugging ban applies to all “mixed sex displays of affection”.
Parents said the 11 and 12 year-old students were told of the ban after a recent hugging “outbreak” when friends saw one another for the first time after school holidays.
"I don't want my child to go to a school in which displays of affection lead to punishment," a mother told The Advertiser.
"My daughter has boys who are friends and she is being told she will be punished if she hugs them, I think that is setting a very bad example for younger and older children."
The state's education department would not tell the newspaper if the ban was in place at any other schools and refused to endorse the measure.

Its a sign of the times. These things have gone way to far. In parts of the US I believe (happy to be shot down in flames here) a little kid can get put on some sort of deviants register for hugging another little kid. Like 5 or 6 year olds. Its all crazy.

Why the fuck not? It's a hug. There's nothing sexual to it.

And what's wrong with fantasies? You want to enforce thought-crimes now? Kids'll hug whether you want them to or not, and banning the act only sends them the message that there's something wrong with it, which there is not.

nothing is wrong with having fantasies its just when it cuts into other things such as school and normal life.

Unless you're completely unlikeable, hugging is part of school and normal life. I'm not even all that popular and I still get the occasional hug.

I have to side with Lucifer on this one.
I hate these things. I can't really hug Cathy at school. It's pretty annoying.

basically they are telling little kids that they should not hug anyone because it is bad.
well I guess they should ban parents from hugging around there kids now.
OMG like c'mon they are little kids.

Lol.. thought-crimes.. I'm sorry Tim, but that was pretty epic what you just said there..
But anyway, I don't see why hugging is such a big, bad thing now-adays. I mean, next they'll ban hand-shaking because you're touching one-another..
IowaBoy, what is so wrong with hugging? I used to hug people every-so-often, and there was nothing sexual about, I had no fantasies and the lot. And what if someone is feelin' sad and they want a hug, is that bad, too?

This is absurd. They're far too young to know or care that hugging has possible sexual associations.

It just bothers me that this sort of thing is what defines our culture here in North America. If there's anything I adore about Europe, it's that they're so much more open about sexuality and touching and things like that over there.

Are you kidding. This is finally breaking out or something? My Nazi/fascist/Christian/tyrannical school would ban us from everything. I couldn't give a "side-hug" to one of my friends. It was atrocious. There was no physical contact allowed whatsoever. Because it's ungodly to touch someone or some BS like that.

If it was my school I would have sex in one of the cubicles in protest then proclaim it to the self righteous little bitches.

Seriously i find that disgusting
shit like this really bothers me
and you wonder why kids are so depressed and fucked up
you wont even let them hug someone they care about
showing affection is human nature plain and simple
there's enough unnecessary shame attached to puberty from society
I don't think it needs to be added too
parents piss me off
when i have kids
i wont stand for their school doing shit like that

When I went to "regular" school (I home-school) I went to a catholic school and they didn't have a problem with hugging so? I really don't get the big deal about hugging. I mean, what could happen from hugging? well I know that, but this just my piece added in.

I was homeschooled so I honestly have no idea what our policy is
I know a student committed suicide cause he was having sex with his English teacher her husband found out and confronted him and his parents at his house. That happened at our public high school I used to take my exams at and crap...Vanier was a shithole
In a town of like 400...ya
Anyway when it comes to friends I tend to be touchy feely, and I have issues understanding the concept of personal space
So I wouldn't do well in an environment like that
so ya its retarded

thats a bit pathetic. over here in england they couldn't give a toss if we hold hands, or for that matter, get off with each other. they're just happy that there's no babies poppin out and we're not at each other's throats. we just tell them where to go if they tell us to cut down on the amount of teenage pregnancies that ar egoing on.(not that i'd know about that anyway coz i've never had one) but, still, we don't ban them from hugging or kissing their lovers, so why do they ban us? We don't make a big deal out of two teachers from the same school doing things they shouldn't in the janitor's office so why should they? well, we do make a big deal actually, but still, that's not the point.

ha, reminds me of me and my ex girlfriend. almost whenever we would hug at school, we would get in trouble, but there are other couples in the 'popular' group who get away with full feeling up (his hand on her boob yadda yadda yadda), it was ridiculous -_-
i even gotten in trouble once for hugging a friend becuse her mother was abusing her -_-

Why? For the vast majority of human history, kids have been getting married and starting families at that age.

Left 4 Dead 2 Is making fun of Australia because it banned it. Australia had many absurd rules. Such as, banning video games for killing zombies, Santa Clauses can't say ho ho ho anymore (Yes its true. I have a friend from Aussie that made a big fuss about this), an now this. What is wrong with Australia? They have gone too far.
