Do any gay people on here get offended when people say something like 'that's so gay' and labels bad things as gay? I don't think they should say it.. I mean, its not like people can say "oh thats so staight" lol

I don't see why it's such a big deal. When people say it they don't mean to offend gay people. It's no different than saying "that's retarded" which is offensive to mentally handicapped people. Once again, I just think people are way to god damn sensitive. It's just a saying...nothing is meant by it.
Of course this is also how I feel about the n word (which I have no problem saying, I just use discretion when saying it, which is why I don't type it out on VT). People are just way to god damn sensitive about a simple little word that isn't even used the way it was used when it was actually offensive. It bothers me when people can't say "the n word" but can say fuck or anything else they want to. How is saying n***** the worst word to say? I just don't get it.
/endrant about how people are two damn sensitive about words.

Before I comment on this quote, I guess I will put my outview on this here thread. I say "that's gay", etc, all the time, and I don't use it to be offensive. It's just me saying I don't like something, and I'm not comparing it to a gay person because I don't hate gay poeple or anything, it's just an expression I use, as do a lot of people. Now, to the quote. Nick, what offends you with the "n" word? It just means ignorance and/or stupidity. I mean, that's what I use it for. I'm not some redneck that hates black people, I use it to describe someone who is ignorant.

It may be different in the US compared to the UK, I wouldnt know. But here I would see it as a racist term pure and simple and I hate racism, totally and completely hate it. I dont think there is any context in which it could be used and not be racist in the UK.

Yeah, I think so. I'm not gay, but I'm not completely ignorant and I don't hurt people by that kind of comment.
Like you said, people don't say "that's so straight".
and I realized, it's the same with "that's retarded" or "you're so retarded", because when using the word gay or retarded you're replacing another word...like stupid are dumb. So by saying that, you're saying that gay and retarded are related to stupid or dumb... and that's pretty cruel.

I am personally not gay, but i do not support such expressions. I feel that this is a very degrading and used as a derogatory term. I understand that people mean to say "that is so stupid" or "that is so lame", but in doing so they create the mentality that being anything other than heterosexual is bad. It is sad that our society decides to decline in terms of human acceptance, when we should be evolving at a time where many different races, religions, and sexualities are combining.

Okay, I say this sometimes. Not very often, but I do occasionally. And I'm about as far from uneducated, ignorant, or homophobic as they come. So no one can use that ridiculous bullshit and actually have a leg to stand on.
Y'all know what? The means of words change. That's the nature of language. Gay used to mean happy, and then it meant homosexual. No one complained about that change. The origin of the phrase "That's so gay" isn't good, I agree, but that change happened a long time ago. Now it's just a part of our common language; it no longer has the negative connotation because the shift from one definition to another has already been made.

Anyone who still says "that's so gay" is just a homophobe, or insecure about there own sexuality. Those people are also just unhappy with there life in some sort of way, so they have to put others who identify as gay down.

Agreed!!
Like take the politics for example...People who didn't vote for Obama were labeled as racists....which obviously means the 47% of the population of the United States are racist of course....:P Yeah...sure....that's obviously not the case. Now, if a gay candidate were running for president, anyone who didn't vote for them would automatically be labeled a homophobe. It's just generalization after generalization. There is no way to avoid biased opinions and thoughts. Minorities always complain about being generalized and discriminated against, but that same kind of generalization is also being put on majorities.

Dude, I'm not homophobic and I say it all the time, and I'm not ignorant. It's just a popular phrase that is embedded into a lot of people's head. I mean, you can't just say that every freaking person who says that is homophobic because there are gay people who say that, so are the afraid of themselves? Hm..?

You wouldn't say 'That's so black!', so why would you say 'That's so gay!'
This couldn't be more true. Both of these statements discriminate against minorities (big words). They also contribute to sterotypes. So why should you say either?
