Off the top of my head, from previous experience: several things can lead to insomnia, most notably anxiety, depression, and stress. Any of these sound like possible causes?

I know what you mean, I do that alot too. And like Julian said, it could be from insomnia, most notably anxiety, depression, and stress. What i usually do it just make my self sleep. Just close your eyes and turn your thoughts into a dream. If that doesn't work, try reading or watch TV in the dark. Those usually get most people tired. Or you could try drinking tea, or something along those lines.

I am hopping to drop some of the stress by getting into some "lower standard" classes.

I have trouble shutting my brain off too. What I've started doing is reading Garfield before I go to bed. It doesn't really engage any thinking, it's light-hearted, and they're tiny. So it's like reading a million super short stories. If I don't do that, I can't sleep. So I'd suggest picking some kind of comic or something of the sort you like and trying that. Or what about music? Have you tried that?
