this is kind of a rant about stereotyping that everyone who self-harms is "emo" and everyone who is "emo" self-harms...
So in english we are working on our poetry unit, and one assignment we got today was to write a poem of our choice (in pairs or by ourselves) and present it to the class. the pair of girls I was sitting beside couldn't think of anything to write so they thought about one of the poems the on girl already wrote (for the unit project thingy). she warned that its was very "emo", because it was about blood. they then made a few "emo" jokes... to their dismay, they weren't allowed to do a poem they had already written so they had to write another one. they decided to stick to their "emo" theme. and when it came time to present their poem, they thought it would be amusing to hold their wrists up to show that they "weren't emo, and didnt slash their wrists"
I was honestly... wanting to scream at them. tell them that they didnt know what the hell they were talking about...
but there's people like that all over my school...
/rant.
if this is more fitting somewhere else, feel free to move it.

Well, people think that is what being "emo" is about. For some reason people keep thinking I'm emo and want me to prove to them im not by "Showing them my wrists".
Honestly, that has nothing to do w/ emo. Besides, emo is just short for emotional right?

emo is first and foremost a music genre.
it doesn't actually mean "emotional"
it just really pisses me off that people associate the 2 things together

Grr. I know what you mean. It's pathetic, but unnfortunatley people like that are everywhere, we will come across them everyday... and it's nothing we can change so we have to learn to get on with it no matter how much it gets to you.

It's sad, but society has a terrible habit of stereotyping people. They associate a group of adjectives with some word that gets thought up and then take it as truth. People are so naive.

sadly, these idiots exist everywhere in the world. Kids will hear these words in the media, not know their real meaning, then associate them with the first thing someone says it does. Tis a disgrace, and is bloody narrow minded and ignorant

Yep you get people like this all the time, you just have to act like you are better than them and blow them off. Be the stronger and better person!

generally I'm a quiet person so I wouldn't actually cause a fuss, but I really want to... one of those same girls made another emo comment today.

There will always be those ignorant people. But you just gotta push through. Yeah, it'll be tough. And at times, you'll feel ready to give up. Don't. Keep pushing forward. Keep your chin up. And ignore those fuckers.

This is just because of the media and some websites that force this to become true. People that make stereotypes become true. I'm not 100% on how self harm got to be mixed with emo but I do know that some people in the year below wanted to be emo so much that they self harmed and showed it around, because they thought it would make them cool. My sister goes along with this.. when she found out about me she said "I knew you'd end up doing something emo like this." Argh, I hate that so much. But people will always be ignorant and will never want to learn any different. So it can't be changed sadly.. not much anyway. It can be changed slightly by more awareness but this is limited to people that again want to know different.
Sorry.. I'm ranting now.

Sadly the term emo is used as synonym for self harm.
Much like gay/fag is used as a synonym for stupid.
People have no understanding of these terms, and as it is unknown to them, they resort to making fun of it.
All they are is ignorant and do not care about knowing it either. They are happy with just making stupid jokes.
The world is a fucked up place that rejoices in ignorance and stupidity.
