Ok so I have a little background for y'all. So at the moment I got to a very small private school (about 250 kids in K-8). So a lot of you are probably thinking "Oh this is great" or "Oh I'd love my school to be this way!"

well guess what? You're dead wrong. This school fucking sucks. Ok to start it off, a lot of the kids here (30 in our 8th grade class) are druggies (pot and inhalents being the drug of choice). Also, the kids are really immature and a lot are stuck up snobs who are complete jackasses or tools.

Ever heard the phrase "Theres always more fish in the sea."? Not at my school. More like "Theres always a few fish in that puddle." Seriously there is 12 girls in the 8th grade. Surely high school has got to be better? I fuckin hope so, cuz I would have to be stuck with the same group of people for 12 fucking years. 12 FUCKING YEARS!!!! how stupid is that?

And becuz ive known these people for so long, most hate me. They know every little fucking thing about me. Talk about a privacy issue. I am really getting pissed off at everyone there.

So what I'm going to do, is try to convince my parents to let me go to a Public High School. Now my parents, knowing jack shit about what goes on at school, thinks that public schools are the scum of the earth.

But are public schools really that bad? My guess is no.
1) No uniforms
2) More people
3) more classes
4) A NEW START! :yeah:

The last one by far is the most important. I am still being judged on things i did in second grade!!! Thats not right!!!!

So tell me, Are public schools as bad as adults make them out to be?

-Adam

And honestly I'm getting pretty depressed becuase of this. :(

It all depends on yourself and the people who go there

There are good private & public schools and bad ones as well.

Exactly.
For example one reason my parents wouldn't let me go to one is becuase they let both my older sisters go and one got in with the wrong group of people blah blah blah etc etc.

Mom, dad, look. Just because they did it doesnt mean I will. Don't let something I want to do be taken away just becuase of one of my sisters mistakes. You want me to go out and socialise, but with who?? All these d-bags and tools that populate our school? I don't think so. I can't stand the immaturity of some people. Maybe im just a bit more mature than others. idk. And really people in our school are still spreading rumors and doing things that we did in the 3rd grade. C'mon guys, GROW THE FUCK OUT OF IT!!!
I dont like your music, but i dont bitch about it. I know you hate my music. You dont have to tell 50 fucking times.

You just can't handle its awesomeness. :yeah:

Well, I used to go to a private school (350 kids at most in k-12) and It was ok, but now I go to a public highschool (1200 kids in 9-12). Now I will give you a synopsis of past events so far this year.

1. We have had 12 fire drills, 9 of which were pranks by students.

2. Someone tried to run over a teacher with the golf cart we were using for drivers ed.

3. EVERY DAY at lunch the cafeteria is uncontrollable.

4. There have been over 10 fights, 6 of which resulted in serious injury.

5. Some one set the bathroom on fire (not just the toilet paper, the ENTIRE bathroom) They brought a water bottle of gasoline and had a rag in it, set the rag on fire and walked out. 5-10 minutes later, BOOM!!, and fire everywhere, he had poured gas in the sinks and on the door as well. I saw it first hand, the bathroom was accross from the nurse and I was coming out of her office when it happened.

I am not telling you this to scare you, but to educate you on what goes on in the majority of public schools. This doesn't mean that EVERY public school is like this, but it does mean that untill you find out what the one you want to go to is like, be on your guard and watch out.

You could try public school or you could go my route. Now let me say first I was in the same situation. My school's graduating class was 8. Yeah 8. And that was the largest we ever had. It's even smaller now. So I went my freshman and sophmore year. Got tired of the stupid drama and bullshit and having religion shoved down my throat.

So my mom actually suggested I go to college. It's about $2500 cheaper than my private school. And it's challenging. Now I of course had to take the GED. But it was soooo easy. I can't stress how stupid easy it was. They gave us like and hour and a half to take one of the four sections and I did it in 30 min. So I think you could go your freshie year then withdraw form enrollment, schedule the GED, and sign up at a community college. (if you have one where you live) Take about 4 classes at the beginning.

Now where I live there's a thing called the lottery scholarship at CNM (Central New Mexico Community College) where you go to school for free. Just the cost of the books. Of course this all might be a bit much for you right now. But think about it.

You could always go to public school for 2 or three years of high school then go to college. That way you get a year headstart on everyone else. For me, by the time I'm 19 I'll have my Paramedic degree, and 1 year of college left to study whatever I want. And then 4 after that at UNM (University of New Mexico) free of tuition because my dad works there. So I've got a 2 year jumpstart on everyone that still goes to my old school. High school is bullshit and waste of time anyway, you don't learn shit in there. IMO

So just do what you want. My way aint for everyone bear in mind. Public school could be good for you too. So just think man.

EDIT: Sorry for the massive wall of text. I got a lil carried away.

I think it might be good for you to move to another school. It's good to explore your options and see whats out there for you. This shouldn't depress you though, you can get through this easily. School by far is not going to be the hardest obstacle in your life by all means! Also - some public middle schools here are going all uniform! Dressing shouldn't be one of your concerns. As long as you have friends you should be good. Talk to your parents!

Ok, thats what I was thinking. But yea I did hear about public schools going all uniforms...none around here thank god. But anywayz, I talked to my mom and she kinda freaked out that i wanted to go to a public school. :( My sisters both went to a public school and they said that was one of the best things that ever happened to them. I dont see why my mom wont let me. Maybe shes trying to have atleast one child go all the way through catholic schools. idk...

Oh and the friends part, thats whats depressing me about my current school: They're a bunch of jerks, but I can't afford to lose them 'cuz if i do I won't have any friends at all! :(

So my main reason for going to a new school is for a fresh start. I could work on my image, etc over the summer and then come to a brand new school with people seeing me for the first time, so I can have a good first impression. Plus I do have a few friends at this public school I would go to, so thats a start. :)

Look public schools aren’t all that great trust me, its rough I’d be in scraps once a week at least. I understand how you want a new start but honestly kinds are kids whether you stay where you are or leave you’ll always be around the same kids.

You’ll find collage to be a breath of fresh air. ;)

Yea i know kids are kids but the thing is, I missed out on my chance with a lot of friends in 1st grade!!!

I'm almost positive that it'll be better, but if its not, I can always just go back to my friends I have now. (There not much for friends...but atleast they like me so idk...)

Not exactly, if you loose touch with your "friends" some of them may not welcome you back into their life. My advice is to follow your feelings, as I said in a previous post, public schools can be terrible, and some can be not that bad. If you decide to go to public school and your mom lets you, just realize that you may be stuck there until you graduate.

Well ok I understand what youre getting at now. True I might never be able to go back but it's a choice im willing to make. TBH im still thinking about it, nothings finalized yet.
But from what my sisters have told me, switching to a public school was one of the best things that happened to them. idk....

One factor is, however, that most of my current friends will be heading to a different high school, like I want to. So that leaves me with very little friends surrounded by a school full of assholes. :/

One more reason: They try to shove religion down our throats at our school. Sure, im Catholic and believe in God and Jesus, but I learned all there was to religion when i was eight. I dont need to have a whole class everyday devoted to something I practice every Sunday anyway.

Our school pretty much believes all homosexuals go to hell. I am not gay, but I can't believe they would just flat out tell kids they can't be gay. Thats not right.

Hehe....boy do I know what you mean here....My old school was the same way. We had a bible class every day, and we prayed the our father before every class, and religion was pretty much tied to everything. I didn't mind some of it, but the majority? yes. I tried to ignore it, but that didn,t work either. I thought it was hell, but really it wasn't all that bad. I g2g, I will post more later, you can pm me if you want, or add me on msn. (I can't post my addy here so pm me if you want it)

Yes haha I know! We have about 4-5 prayers we say in the morning, 2 before luch, and 2 before we leave school.

And these people expect US to be role models to the younger grades. It's not fair to us that we have to behave and act nicely around them. If at all possible, just seperate us from those little shit-heads. I dont give a fuck whether they get scarred for life from us, its their parents fault for sending them to a school that has 1-8 in the same building. No wait, in the same hallway! haha

Well guys I think this is what I'm gonna do:

As long as the rest of this school year is alright, I'll atleast give the Catholic High School a chance. I will go there for a year and if things don't get better I'll switch. I'm really hoping things will get better. :)

Back up a second. The majority of public high schools? That's quite a stretch. You can't make a claim about 'the majority' of public high schools if you've only been to one. It depends on the demographics, sure, but you can't claim a 'majority'.

I went to a private school for a lot of my life (400 kids in K-8th grade), then went to a public high school after that. The public high school had 3,000 kids (grades 9-12). That's a lot of kids, and you would think that could cause a lot of problems. But really, it didn't. Sure, we had our share of trouble (kid pulls a fire alarm every now and then, small bit of drugs, little bit of fighting), but those are things you find everywhere.

But to say that someone throwing a Molotov Cocktail into a bathroom is something you'd find in a 'majority' of public high schools? You're mistaken, sir.

Not just my own school, but through college I've met many people who went to many different high schools all over the USA, both public and private, and frankly I've found the stories from the private schools more disturbing than the public schools.

It all depends on your demographic. If you live in a big city with a lot of crime, for example, you'll see that reflected in the school you go to, most likely. If you live in an area with a gang problem, then you may see some of that in your school. If the school is in an area with a lot of drugs, some kids will bring drugs to school. But that's going to happen regardless of where you go.

The key is to find the right people. The ones who share your values and morals, as well as your interests and hobbies. You have to find the right balance. And I believe that's possible regardless of how big or small the school is.

Is your local public high school large? If so, you may find it's a refreshing change. If it's small, you may find it to be more of the same crap you're used to. I will tell you that many people mature (albeit only slightly, for most of them) in high school. So you have that to look forward to. Just try to find the right people.

I have been to 3, and they have all been similliar, but I guess you could be right, although I didn't mean to say that the majority had THOSE problems, I was just saying that the majority had problems, some serious. Sorry if I offended you :)

Ok to answer the question on the size:

Springfield Catholic (schs) is about 300-350 students...
The public school I would go to (willard) is around 1100 students.

All together in all the years? D:
My high school was 300 each year group/grade, with total of 1550. And that is ages 11-16 (im british).
I am now in College/Sixth Form, 16-18, and there are 1000 in each year/grade!! Big change tbh

IMO I think you should give the school your Mum wants, a try. This si the deal I made with my Mum regarding College. I was adamant I didn't want to go here, but agreed to try it for at least a month, and if I was sure I didn't want to then she would help me fund my travel costs (Help, not pay); to go to the college I wanted to go to, which was about an hour away. Turns out, it wasn't like I imagined. It was nothing like High school. My life has begun to change. I was bullied constantly from the age of 6 to 16, all verbal stuff. Now, nothing. :) In fact I can actually say that I have FRIENDS. Miracle I know LOL.

Anyway. Back to the point, you. Give it a try and if you don't like it the swop :)

oh, p.s. Not sure about over there, but here we get Religious Public Schools :) There is one on my street LOL. So maybe look into that for your Mum too.

-- The HS and College I go to are both Public ones btw. :P

Well the thing is here in the USA we have a little thing called sperating church and state (government). So public schools cannot be affiliated with any religion. Thats why I was put through a Private school (they can be a part of a religious orginazation).

Now on the student question;

Both of those student counts are for grades 9-12. My current school has 250 students in PreK-8.

And one more question;
When colleges look through your records and shit for scholarships, is it true that they look at private schools before public schools? This is the reason why my mom wants me to go there.

And I'm really just gonna be digging myself a bigger hole by staying at Catholic........People say public won't be better but I say Fuck That....It will be. (:

No, actually they look at public school records with more weight. Some private schools aren't even accredited. The main reason colleges look at public school records with more weight is because they don't have religion classes. In the eyes of the collegs, religion classes are a wast of valuble time that could be spent learning.

For instance, when I transferred from my private school to the public one, they counted three of the classes I HAD to take at the private school (and already had taken) as elective credits not core-class credits.
