major police operation has begun in North Yorkshire after two men fled from the scene of a crash which left a 10-year-old boy dead.
The boy was crossing Holgate Road in York at 2020 BST on Saturday when he was hit by a blue Ford Transit van.
The two occupants of the van, described as white males in their late teens or early 20s, stopped at the scene but then ran away leaving the van.
The boy was taken to York District Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He has not been named but his family have been informed. Police said the boy was local to the area.
A police helicopter is in use over the city to trace the men.
The collision occurred near Holgate Bridge, known locally as the Iron Bridge. The road around this area was closed but has since re-opened.
