View Full Version : Deleting Accounts.

I think if a person has been banned then their account should be deleted. Somebody might bring up a point that they might have posted something that could be useful to somebody searching through the forums, but this site is pretty big, I'm sure if they asked for advice they'd get it.

The thing about deleting accounts of banned members is that you can get unbanned(like me) and it screws up other things that i can't remember.

Some banned members may have once contributed to the forums, so why get rid of those posts when they are helpful?
Also as Kyle said bans can be lifted.

The main reason is why?..
Its a completely non beneficial thing to do and puts useless work load on admins

When a member is banned for being an advertising bot, or for posting links to porn, obviously the related posts are deleted. For all other posts though, it just screws things up. Remember that every post responding directly to and/or quoting the deleted posts would have to be edited or deleted as well (or it wouldn't make any sense). It would just get too complicated, particularly if a banned member has hundreds of posts. Even if we could just push a button and clear all posts by one member, we can't hit a button to get rid of everything related to those posts, and going through everything manually would be impossibly complicated and tedious.
Not all bans are permanent, either. Some are set to be lifted, after a period of up to two years. In the case of underage members for example, they're generally not be banned forever--just until they're 13. Sometimes a ban only lasts a few weeks, sometimes a few months... the point is, deleting those posts would do no good.
It's a fair idea, but too many complications. :)

i dont think it is a good idea, the admins would have another workload.

I think its a good idea. I mean, sure they'll get extra work but they've been banned for a reason and it's part of their job to keep the site clean.

Once there banned the only way to find any traces of them is to go to there profile.
Also as I said already some banned members DID contribute for a while and they still deserve credit for. However if they get banned for posting porn etc. then that post is deleted.
So the site is still kept clean.

Jessi has explained it clearly enough, it would be (or at least could be in some cases) an enormous amount of work to remove all traces if the person had been an active poster over a period of time. Really completely impractical.

Why is it such a big issue and your also missing a very big point which has been raised over three times now, if a member is banned a ban can be lifted....Thats why members aren't removed completley of the site.

If I'm understanding what your meaning, That is already in place, just because they have a banned/frozen face doesn't mean there gone forever.
Also people can appeal bans etc. therefore there perm ban may be reversed if staff agree it should be lifted.

ok i cn see ur point bout the banns being lifted etc... but how bout this in stead of bannin g them staright away y not send them a warning via pm and delete the offending post and then if do it say three then band and remove rtherir account that way u wont hav to feel anything for appeal becoz they hav be given warnings jus like in real lofe u cautioned first then get u senttenced
and i meant give mods the power to delete accoutns (obious to only the trusted ones)

We have an infraction system set up that does that. If you break a big rule or get 100 infraction points you're banned. Also if you are constantly starting fights or something you can be baned.
Also not even mods are going to be given powers to delete members the way the staff is set up now is good enough.

i hink that the posts that they got banned for should be dleted but the helpful posts they made should be left for new members to scroll through instead of making new threads.

I don't know if its already been said since I'm too lazy to check, but there's a reason most accounts won't get deleted. Doing so could potentially leave holes in a lot of threads and could cause a lot of confusion, hence the reason they don't get deleted.
