What the FUCK is this supposed to mean?
We've been going over this stuff in class for the past month, and I have a project due on it sometime mid-october. My teacher is very vauge and won't give me a clear definition of what the fuck she wants.
1) What the hell is a symbol?
2) How the hell do you define culture. In this society, where no one cares where you came from.
3) For everyone who's had to do "personal projects" and doesn't exactly have the most appropriate stuff to talk about, how do you pick things that are school-appropriate?

A symbol.. A cross, swastika, symbol of eternity ( vertical 8 ) etc etc those are symbols
By race and ancestral nationality
I used to be angry & pissed off at every stupid assignment I got but since I can analyze things and put myself in peoples shoes and since I understand people easily I just knew what a certain teacher would accept and what not

A symbol is a thing that represents something. Ie : lys flower, poutine, habs logo, law 101 and "tabarnak" is what I'd use for French Canadian culture.
Culture...can be anything. Culture is what links a group of people. Grunge fans, Afghanis, judoka, gangsters can all be considered a part of their respective culture, ie Afghan culture, grunge scene, judoka culture, etc.
The goal of this assignment seems to be to get you to think about what you are a part of. I'm a little dismayed you need a forum to realise in which groups you can considered a member of.

1) What the hell is a symbol?
Simple, it's anything that represents something else. For example, if you were to say something about love, you could show a Valentine's heart, a rose, a box of chocolates, etc... .
2) How the hell do you define culture. In this society, where no one cares where you came from.
The best definition of culture I think would be that from a sociological perspective, in which it's an over-arching set of values, beliefs and morals that one group comes to a consensus over. In other words, for a certain religion, such as Christianity, one fundamental element is compassion. You can go more specific, such as seeing whether or not a specific topic is frowned upon, such as abortion or blood-transfusions.
It's not about simply where you came from, it's what you believe, it's what makes a group, even if it's a clique stay together by consensus.
3) For everyone who's had to do "personal projects" and doesn't exactly have the most appropriate stuff to talk about, how do you pick things that are school-appropriate?
It somewhat depends on whether or not your school is a hard-core, strict religious school or whether it's a more lenient school. But regardless, just use common sense, so don't get a picture of a gruesome headless guy lying in a pile of blood as a symbol for something.
The way I see it, if you don't have something very appropriate to talk about, then choose something else, even if it means choosing something you're not so keen on. So, if you wanted to use the headless corpse lying in blood for a symbol, take a different symbol, such as a pirate ship with a black pirate flag or get a picture of Captain Hook from Peter Pan. You can convey the same or similar idea in a more school-appropriate way.
