The official toll from the tsunami and 8.3-magnitude earthquake has climbed to 76 with 47 confirmed deaths in Samoa, 22 in neighbouring American Somoa and seven on the Tongan island of Niuatoputatu, which borders Samoa. More than 135 people have been injured

i ment to post about this earlier. this is really bad indeed and very sad. the water force was so strong that it caused yauchts to crash into eachother in a harbour in new zealand. its unbelievable and very sad.

It really is terrible. I've heard details ranging from the earthquake being a 7.9 to the 8.3 mentioned here, but it doesn't make much of a difference once you get to about an 8.0. The earthquake alone would have done so much damage, but triggering a tsunami, too? I can't imagine.

The effects spread all the way out to the California coast, apparently, due to the direction the force was travelling, that's how huge this was. 4500 miles away and the tsunami advisory actually extended all the way out to here. We were advised not to swim in the ocean yesterday or to boat around, because the tide levels were expected to get higher, waves up to a foot higher, and the currents could change a bit temporarily. It's just insane how much effect this has had. As least the casualty rate is low so far, just looking purely at the numbers. I don't know what percentage of the population that is, I know Samoa isn't huge.
