Hello all my name is Alex and well I have been cutting for 11 years now and I started when I was 8 and now I really feel the need to stop this horrrible cycle I live in michigan and there are no support groups at all in Michigan and hardly any in the united states. This is a very growing proble and I really want to make people even more aware of and at the same time get help for me and help others. There are over 2 million people in the United states how infilct self harm on their selves and its really a huge growing epdimic it is so bad that they will be classifiying it in THe DSM five in 2012 when it is released for those of you that do not know what the DSM is it the manuel used to point out and diagnios people with mental disordes I would liike any how would like to be apart of trying to find some way to get this made aware of by helping me or even if you just want to talk as right now i only have two im services but i will try and get the other ones later, feel free to contact me any time by pm on here or im me. I really want to raise awarness about this because this is a really serious issue.

well its good you want to stop. You have a positive attitude, you want to help people who do it as well. thats good, however, maybe you should fix yourself before you help others. or help pass your experiences onto others, teach them what you know. If you can help just one or two people quit, you've made a difference. remember that.

I agre with lonely ours. You DO have a positive attitude but you should look after yourself first.

I have to agree with this :), always think positive and because you say you have no support groups around I am sure there will be some on the internet or even here in vt :)

Thank you all to have replied to this post but yeah I really feel that this is helping me with my problems and its also a way to vent and I know that it's hard to stop after I have been doing it for so long but thats just how I am helping others makes me feel good and I beileve in healing woth others at the same time because who better to help someone than some one that is going through similar problems. I see now that its all about impulse control and thats what a lot of people who self harm have a problem dealing with (but thats just my view on the sitiuation.) but a also noticed that some self harmers do it because they are just bored and they get all these negative thoughts in there head and they head for the razor.... I am really trying to study this problem more because the more info that you gather the better you can help your self heal like one solution is making a list of things to do instead of cutting you can just start off with just one or two things my list is up to 11 now so that seems to be working well for me but what works for one might not work for another thats why I want to try to resreach this more so this problem start getting the attention that is deserved of it...

Self harm gets a lot of attention and so you should have no problem in finding a lot of information on the topic.

It kinda neglected here in the states and there i the whole stigma that people who cut over are trying to get attention or they are trying to be "emo"
which sush a horrible term to me.

its an easy topic to get infomation on, there any even youtube videos with people, relating their own experiences, and how they beat it. If you can find it on youtube, or somewhere, BBC3 did a great program on it a few months ago. If people stereotype cutters as *emos* then you can challenge their perceptions. make them think differently, and realise they have the wrong view.

Actually I think you'll find that most of the States are well informed as to how to treat those with self harm issues.

Start one. Test the water. Maybe a bit too ambitious though.....

Its good that you want to stop. Just take it one step at a time, slowly. You could write a diary and see if there is a pattern to see what led you to self harming. Try and think of any hobbies. Believe me, I know how you feel, im going through it now.

Why don't you look for a counsellor?
The best help tends to actually be from professionals.

yup i have counsler here that is helping me out we are both trying to get this group up and running. I live in Detroit, Mi USA and the population here is mainly african american and most of them don't really understand it much but they are curious and supportive so that why I think it should not be to hard just have to get the ball rolling here

maybe do an assembly/presentation on it in school/university? Make a youtube video? write an article for a local paper? offer support for everyone, and anyone? In my opinion, if you can(or people in general) only help one, or two people, you will have made a difference.
