Yeah, if you have a good enough audio system, and a good enough sound card and/or reciever, then it shouldn't matter what altitude they're at. As long as they're facing toward you, like they're supposed to.

Not always. If your speakers have high range tweeters then having them at the right height helps a lot. High range sounds are very directional, so having the speakers at the right height will put the sound stage where you are sitting.
