View Full Version : Repeating threads in p101

OK, so we all know it happens all the time that new guys join vt and post a question thats been asked loads of times before or may be answered in one of the stickies.

Now to be honest we all get a bit bored answering the same question over and over and some of us (hopefully not me too often) tend to snap at the newbie a bit and tell them to read the other threads.

But the thing is, we were all new here once, and had to find our way around. And the only way you can get to feel accepted and a part of the forum is to make posts and get some replies and feedback. Sometimes the previous thread on the same topic will be "old". Now old might only mean a couple of weeks, but thats enough for the newbie to get their head bitten off for bumping an old thread. So they cant win really, if they start a new thread on the same subject they will get shouted at, and if they post in the old thread they get their wrist slapped. Yet they want to make their point and their contribution to the topic.

Now it seems to me that we need the newbies to be joining and to be making posts to keep the site vital and alive, otherwise the posts would just dry up. So we should try to make sure they feel welcome and appreciated.

So I would suggest we should all remember we were new once and try to answer with politeness when we can. Post a link to an existing topic or point them in the right direction by all means. But do it gently.

Ok, so those are my thoughts on the topic. Now shoot me down!

There comes a point when you get tired of having to see threads about the same thing. I know that because I was there. There are newbies on this site, but how are most of them going to learn not to do things like this? It's all trial and error. They will learn, but if they choose not to, then that's their fault. We shouldn't be biting off their heads all because they keep asking the same questions. If people don't want to see the threads and posts made my new members in the P101 forums, then do what everyone else does and just ignore that forum.

Yes we are all new at something at one point, we just have to be professional about answering their questions! So maybe give a little advice and then tell them to use the search option at the top and look at old threads for more info!

I completely agree. Though I have never made a thread in any P101 forum. If they read the Rules/Regulations and the FAQ's, though, they would know to search the forums for an answer.

We do need to make them feel welcome, as, yes, we were all new at some point.

why should we have to put up with people blatently ignoring the rules. the rules are in place for a reason, if they dont obey them like the rest of us. No excuse for not knowing the rules when there clearly highlighted and colourful above the forum.

if oyu think that they get bad abuse here then you should definately NOT go to some of the other forums out there
its like the real world
no excuse for not knowing the rules when there told very clearly.

But how are they supposed to know? They won't read announcements or stickies. They want their own thread and question answered immediately. I think it's just a thing that the forum has to live with, plain and simple.

This should be mandatory.

Whilst you do have a point Nick, I do still get annoyed by the sometimes agonising repetition of the same bloody threads again and again and again and againsnnn...... *falls off of desk*

Seriously though, whilst P101 is kind of the backbone to the forum, there is only a certain level of acceptance that we can have for the same repetitive and monotonous threads.

I always thought The Psych Ward was the primary focus of this forum?
Well, it used to be anyways...

Yeah I figured he meant the members, but P101 is not the main focus of this forum, I don't think.

Just a note: I was referring to the members that are brought into the forum, yep :)

Unfortunately P101 is the major attraction for mostly the worst members here. Lol.

I love that, if this thread brings that to the attention of a few more people then it will have achieved something. (Maybe not what I wanted it to achieve but something good anyway.)

But how are they supposed to know? They won't read announcements or stickies. They want their own thread and question answered immediately. I think it's just a thing that the forum has to live with, plain and simple.
Well I think thats getting to the heart of my point really.

Dah, some people I guess I just cant get along with!

Well my take, and I know I've said it before, is that while it might me repetitive for us its a new, and perhaps really important, question for the person that posts it.

That's kinda damning and judgemental Marcie. Quite a few people started out on P101, even some that may have already contributed in a somewhat negative manner to this thread.

It's not a lie though if you look at a majority of the members banned you'll see that they started off in p101.

OK, I know what you're saying there and its right. But I don't think this way of talking down p101 contributers is healthy to the site. Yes it attracts some wierdos. Hopefully they get spotted and dealt with. But it attracts lots of other people too who go on to be, I hope, valued and respected contributers to the fora.

Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. Asking a question you can read in another thread or when you can just fucking google it (http://www.justfuckinggoogleit.com) warrants the title "stupid question."

Personally, I think P101 is retarded and is just a beacon for trolls to troll us. They know damn well what they're doing and they don't care.

But giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that they're not trolling (a benefit not deserving), fact of the matter is that they're behaving stupidly and deserve to be told so. The first thing you do when you join a forum is read the rules and try to get a feel for the community; not make a thread.

i think we just have to live with it. anyway, most of the members that start threads in p101 it will be there first and last thread.

Here's an idea! Let's make a forum bot that instantly answers every question with 'Yes!', 'No!' or 'Ask me again, dumbass!'

Or, wait, no, even better! Let's just replace all the P101 forums with a hotlink to Govteen! We'll let them deal with it. ; )

Usually the people that make those threads disappear after a couple weeks when they have their answer. And the point of searching is so they don't have to ask it at all. If more people read the rules none of this would be a problem and if people have a problem with people not searching old threads then yea they post about it but if they have a pissy attitude report them. Also they. An just avoid the place like I do at times.

I agree that we should be nice the new peoples... but still I do think that we should tell them, every damn time... to look for similar threads, don't bump old ones, and check the stickies. I know they never will, because it's the internet....

*sighs and goes back to p101*

Agreed, it is kinda "hurtful" to the eyes when you see the same survey over and over again... The admins should make it for members with 5+ posts or something :)

nah thats pointless... it was tried with posting links and images.

this discussion is lurking somewhere, the newbies just post random things so they can post their pointless threads/questions.
