View Full Version : Bringing back visitor messages

I thought I'd make this suggestion because this hasn't been talked about in a while it seems.
What's really stopping us from enabling the visitor messages? I think we've been deprived long enough. I understand that it was used in the wrong way, but doesn't the staff think it's time to trust us? Why not make a report button that will automatically PM the staff about an unsavory comment? That would work!
I added a poll, so let's see how this works out. Rebuttles are welcome.

I don't see why not, but I haven't been here long enough to remember visitor messages, so:P.

Guests can't post unless they join. Visitor messages are where a member goes to another member's profile and leaves a comment (hopefully, a nice one). Sorry if there wasn't any clarification.

oooooh so somewhat like The Wall on Facebook and such? Hmmm, seems a little social-networky to me, but I'm still a VT n00b, so who knows.

alot of the new members would abuse it
and wouldnt report it
and we cant check every single profile everyday for any bad comments
but for certain members yes. chosen based on post count or time as member i think it could be good
but yea it is a lil bit social networkey

I would love to have it back with heavy moderation.

Visitor messaging was revisited already this summer and we came to the same conclusion that they won't be coming back.
There are plenty of methods of what you can choose from to communicate with people here. There are social groups, private messaging, chat rooms, diaries, and shoutbox. There isn't any difficulty with communicating with people here on VT.
Adding more channels of communication, especially a tedious one, makes it much more difficult to monitor things here. The staff of this website's primary goal is to continue the mission of the site as a place for teens to get help, and visitor messaging isn't a priority in that regard.

No way! Too difficult. "Heavy moderation" isn't something easily done here, and it would have to be constant and constant. And people don't always report something bad. Too many flaws, and why not enjoy what you already have? I haven't seen another forum with a shoutbox ever. We have a nice chatroom. Forums. PM's - people have a lot of fun over those. Heck those are a huuuuge privilege. They could be exploited so easily but we still get them. Diaries. Nobody seems to EVER appreciate social groups.
I agree with Anthony.

i dont think it would be a good idea, people would abuse it.

It would seem to much along the lines of a social-networking site, and also if we implemented a rule that only members above a certain post count can use it then that is just creating more of a hierarchal system which VT doesn't need.
(yes, i have changed my opinion from the last thread about these)

Heavy moderating is having anyone that doesn't meet a certain criteria needing their visitor comments approved and it really doesn't bother me to go through them all and approve the good ones we do it with picture comments. Also if you abuse it you lose it, we shouldn't have to punish everyone because people want to be pervs we should just take it away from them.

Yeah it would be too hard to control and the fun police don't want us to have fun.

They aren't necessary...at all...there are many other ways to communicate with people. Plus, as we've seen in the past, they were abused.

Ditto.
I know your probably thinking but we won't abuse it this time, however we have tried relaunching them before and it happens again and again, yes a lot of people did use the messages the way it should be but a lot didn't. Hence why it was stopped.
There is a flash chat, shoutbox and PM system on this site, lots of ways to communicate with people.

What's really stopping us from enabling the visitor messages? I think we've been deprived long enough.
Excuse me? You've been DEPRIVED long enough? You suffer so much, right? The staff don't work their asses off all the time to keep VT being the awesome place it is, right? This is just some shitty little piss poor site run by clueless teenagers that offers you NO privileges WHATSOEVER. Poor, poor you. How do you POSSIBLY survive without the sacred, universally coveted visitor messages that no one really cared about until they were taken away?
I understand that it was used in the wrong way, but doesn't the staff think it's time to trust us?
Haven't you ever seen a movie or show where a girl wants to go out with some dude and the dad says no and she pulls the 'don't you trust me' line and he hits back with, "It's not you I don't trust, it's him."? Come on, we've all heard it.

14,000 people are impossible to moderate. Even 1,000 is pretty formidable for a staff of 20 people with real lives outside of VT. And even if someone reports a visitor message every so often, the bulk of the inappropriate ones go on between people who don't draw much attention to themselves or their conversations and thus go unnoticed by everyone.
The cons outweigh the pros by far. There is no reason whatsoever for visitor messages to be brought back.

I have voted Yes to make the point that polls are meaningless.

Well, not everything can be decide by a simple majority vote. Especially when only 30 people even cast a vote. So, polls in suggestions are sometimes "useless", but they can be an easy way to see the opinions of the people who've posted/popped their heads in without having to scan through the posts.

What about giving people the opportunity to moderate their own?

In my own experience on other sites that is always a tool available to members. I would have a nightmare on my forum if the individual members didn't have the option to moderate their own pages...
Use this forum as a model of sorts.

If you moderated, you would only moderate your own page, then you can report or delete the messages like with PM's. So how would that get abused?

You're missing my point.
The main reason visitor messages were disabled was because there were some severely inappropriate conversations going on that conflicted with the policies we hold in such high esteem here. So of course, the biggest concern with reinstating visitor messages is having these inappropriate conversations start up again. Hence my comment, "I'm pretty sure people abusing the system aren't going to report themselves."

I don't like that option. They have it on Gov, and I hate it. Mainly why I left there.

Why would you need visiter messages when you have PMs? I don't like the idea of having your account filled with random comments from random people.
